I'm good with the turbo 4. Having driven lots of NA 6's at higher altitudes, it will probably work better than the wheezy 4.0 climbing mountain passes. I like having the option of a manual, but will probably go for the auto for towing ease. I also like the rear coil springs for ride comfort, and air bags within the coils are an easy upgrade for better load capacity. The styling is what it is, and I debadge/desticker any vehicle I buy, and tend towards basic colors. I'll never understand complaining about styling while driving around in lime green or bright orange trucks. The one thing I really dislike is the pervasive technology, so hopefully more basic Tacomas will be available after the initial roll out. The one other thing I really wish they had done is include an auto 4wd setting for winter driving. Switching back and forth from 2 to 4 on variable snow/ice/dry roads is a pain, and if they can engineer something as advanced as MTS, why not an auto 4wd system. My father's POS '16 Silverado has it, and it works great, unlike most other tech on his truck.

I like: Independent rear suspension, disc brakes

Dislike: Price, less HP for the MT, some package combinations driving prices, 4-banger turbo (TBD) w/ ~same MGP's, TSS, dash looks (reminds me of the dorkle), added useless tech that drove up the price.

Overall, I am looking forward to driving one, but doubt I'll ever be a buyer.

Gen4 looks good overall b/c designers wisely made an effort to build on existing Gen3 trademarks. Only the stuff that shouts “Tundra”makes you wince (staring at your rear end..). Overall, if not that clanky 4 cylinder, at least the TNGA-F bones should be celebrated, and the new truck deserves to sell like hotcakes. Too bad about the new prices & feature cost-cutting.

Gen4 could be ideal for those who own much older Tacomas, or people looking for their very first Tacoma, but may not move the needle enough for 2020+ owners who already have a newer, well-sorted Tacoma, and paid a lot less. For them, the sum of all of those expensive TNGA-F parts underneath may not yet warrant the significant increase in cost for them to trade.

For me, maybe after a test drive, maybe after hybrid, or maybe not for a long while.

    I agree.

The power complaint really gets me though. 0-60 in ~7 secs is not good enough for some folks? :)

My truck surprised me and other drivers on the road quite a few times.

I don’t understand because my four-cylinder keeps up with Bay Area traffic which has notoriously short on ramps and people driving way above the posted speed limit. What exactly are the people that want acceleration times in the 5 to 6 second range doing? There is nothing in your normal daily commute that would require a 5 seconds 0 to 60 blast… especially from a pick up truck.

All of these things were non-issues back when Toyota and the other truck manufacturers were still bothering to make different variants, but everything is now converging on the 60-70k four-door short bed, dad truck with a ridiculous factory lift, luxury interior, and massively boosted engine that will outrun low end German performance SUVs, just not outcorner them.

I have to give props for Toyota at least making a two-door variant and Nissan keeping the access/king cab because the Americans are doubling down on the four-door short bed Dad truck. That’s not saying Toyota won’t quietly discontinue the short cabs within a few years citing poor sales. Just because something doesn’t sell well doesn’t mean it doesn’t sell, all you’re doing when you say that is eliminating choice and then you wonder why people abandon your brand.

As much as some of us like to piss and moan about it (myself included), Toyota still knows how to sell trucks. There's like 8 people in the 4th gen threads bitching about the new truck, but I have no doubt they'll sell like crazy. Its not for me at all, but apparently thats what 'the public' wants.

Just yesterday I’m driving, chilling. There is this stretch of road where there are 3 traffic lights in about a miles distance.

Girl in a Jeep starts tailgating me, then stomps on it and goes around me. Well as expected, red light ahead. I sloooowly roll up to her, have a quick glance. She looked pissed haha. She had the “N” displayed in the back, kind of understandable.

What surprises me is that grown men and women do this all the time. Happens to me daily. I time my lights and usually just roll right through them. Saves brakes, gas and your nervous system.

What’s funny thought, I live in a pretty small town where there is absolutely zero traffic and you can get anywhere in 5-15 mins, so why would one rush anywhere.

Anyway, I love slooowoy rolling up on all these crazy folks that passed me. Most of the time I throw it in second and I’m
    Off before they are haha.

Apparently quite a few TW folks say that even the 3.5 is “dangerous” on highway on ramps and city driving. Which is just complete opposite from my experience. My truck is a fucking rocket if I want it to be.

You absolutely do not put bigger tires on an old man truck. If anything you’re supposed to put cheap fender flares and towing mud flaps that your grandson got you at AutoZone to make the tires and wheels appear smaller.

Price and excessive tech (safety stuff and hybrid powertrain) are the problems for me. Assuming reliability and value retention stay good, those two are the most important. Like others, I think my current Tacoma may be my last but we'll see. Everyone seems to be designing away from what I would want.

I wish someone made the car/truck equivalent of this

That's pretty cool. Thanks for sharing. Would be nice if they made a street legal version/option.

Nice. I would love to move out to Idaho. Rafted the Salmon river a few years back. Remarkable place. Seems like a different world compared to modern "city life" as it were.

Every once in a while people in heavily modified off-road SXS will take over LA. CHP and LAPD will chase them like the fate of the universe depends on it.
