I'm considering a cap/shell for my 2017 DCSB but looking for ballpark prices before I start talking to dealers. I'm just outside of Philly, PA, but I doubt prices vary too much by area.

So, if you've bought a cap/shell in the last year for a short bed, I'd appreciate a reply of the model and what you paid.

    Thanks!

Yoinks! That's a lot of bells & whistles. I should have qualified, I'm looking for something pretty basic. Sliding front window would be nice, simple lockable T-handle back window and side sliders. From what I've read, properly color-matching the Silver Sky paint might be complicated.

If you're patient and ok with used, check craigslist. There won't be nearly as many for a third gen, but they pop up from time to time and you've got to be willing to drive a bit. I'm looking to pay less than $400 for my camper shell and already have a couple leads.

brand new color matched caps run from 2500-3500+

you can usually find a color matched cap on the used market for a fraction of that price, and there are quite a few already out there for third gens!!!

If you buy a new Leer or ARE get a coupon off their web site. Usually good for a free carpeted headliner, fold down window or a few bucks off.

It helps to be proactive and email people/dealers selling a truck with a cap. They usually don't mind selling it separate because they can still sell the truck for the same price and make a few extra bucks on top.

I went with the ARE V-series, no bells and whistles, just sliding windows with pet screens. $1300 installed. Hard to find used shells for our newer models unfortunately.

I ended up buying a used cap off of CL, but I had emailed many dealers for quotes when I was still considering new. It was amazing the difference in prices from 1 dealer to the next. On a Basic Leer model with carpeting, fold down front window, and roof tracks, was $800 cheaper from a dealer about 2 hrs away, than the one a mile from my house. When I showed the local dealer the quote I had, he claimed it was far less than his cost, and would not counter offer...

I tried this tactic for 6 months. Emailed every dealer I found within about 100 miles, both new and used lots. 1/2 didnt respond to me, a bunch said its against company policy, and several told me to go F myself...

Well that's unfortunate! Hopefully that's not the case with me, although I pretty much had a dealer told me to fuck off this morning.

Worst one to me was a dealer who responded and said he would get back to me with a price. 2 days later he had not responded, but I was off from work with no plans for the day. So I decided to go drive to the dealer with cash in hand and see what they had to say. When I got there the guy at the counter told me my request was ridiculous and they would not sell it. I emailed the guy back and thanked him for wasting my time since it was company policy to never sell parts from a truck. He tried to tell me he said that in his email, but I had just been replying to all the emails, so every email we had sent back and forth was there for record. Then he said it was a "miscommunication".

Such a shame. I even tried to explain to the dealer that they're not losing any value, and can still sell the truck for the same price plus make a few hundred extra, and they responded telling me if I wanted the shell to buy the whole truck.
