    If I may add:

    What people did had a more direct effect on their survival.
    They owned it, so to speak. And personal responsibility enlarges you.
    Sure, there were all sorts of misfortunes that could befall...
    Sickness, warfare, your crop could fail...
    But you fought as best you could. Your purpose was pretty clear.
    And you had occasional small victories when life didn't seem so hard.
    If fortunate, you managed to raise a family and pass something on.

    A lot of people have trouble finding purpose these days.
    That is fatal for the human spirit.
