Looks like a ruby breasted geezbo to me.

 

I typically see deer in the morning/afternoon.in the fields.

Like this but had a dark patch on it's chest.

Unfortunately that one is the most clear. He wasn't letting me take a picture and kept moving on me.

Complete unmarked white breast? Or was there spotting, streaking, etc in the breast?

Noticeably long tail? White markings in tail?

No actually, it had a dark patch. Maybe a dark red or brown, I couldn't be sure.

Are there any identification books you'd recommend? I tried searching earlier but couldn't find something with solid reviews.

 

Its shape is making me think a thrush, but you got 12 species in the thrush family that can be found in Montana. Not all have the word thrush in the common name either. Guessing
a Catharus species. Need better photos for a more educated guess.


Anything Peterson or Sibley is good.
