Long ear then. Greats wouldn't have those big of ears.

Long-ears are a real cool species. I've never seen them out in the open during the day like that. Found a nest once, definitely the coolest nest/chicks I've ever found for owl species.

Silly question, but was it 24 hours of light or something? You that far north? If not seems there were trees around and better roost locations. Per the guides they're strictly nocturnal, but that picture seems to be opportunistic perch hunting during the day. I've seen that once down here with a barn owl that are strictly nocturnal per the guides (obviously there are outliers from the rule).

Nope not that much light up here this time of year and not that far south. I was basically a stones throw from Montana there. Day light was 7ish and sunset around 630.

When i first showed up there was some magpies chasing him. I assume they were pushing him off his kill or some sort of meal they were feeding on.

 

Ohhh, that makes more sense. They probably chased her out of its roost spot and that was a stopover perch while being harrased.

 

Seen a real cool falcon(no idea which it was) of course while i was settinf yp my phone on my scope he took of so no pic so I could look him up. Cool looking bird he was.

 

Grey and big by chance?

 

Yup he was a big and grey. Speckled to a bit on the belly.

 

Is there Grys around you? Dont got their range memorized.
