    Story time with Gritto. :)

Back when I was still on the Board at my Club, we had an unsolved mystery.
It was late Summer and very dry, plus we had a heat wave of 100 degree temperatures for a few days.
Understand that both conditions are quite rare here.

Well, we had a brush fire behind the Rifle Range.
It took off and started uphill on Shippen's Knob.
Most of the local volunteer fire departments were there, but what could they do?
Actual, serious forest fires are almost non-existent here.

Nobody knew what to do, no one had any training or equipment.
I was there watching them argue.

I pointed out that what was needed was a bunch of guys with shovels and axes. Mostly shovels.
I had briefly signed up to be on call with a fire fighting detail at George Washington National Forest in Virginia, many years ago.
(I was attending a college in the Shenandoah Valley at the time.)
Most fires there were from escaped campfires.
Went out a few times to sweep an area that had a brushfire to make sure nothing was still smoldering, that's about it.
Nevertheless...as little as I knew, it was more than those guys. :p

Well, the fire eventually went out all on its own.
    Like they always do.
Under the surface leaves and brush, which flare up pretty good, the ground is always moist.
When it reached the top of the Knob, the fire went out.
Helluva lot of smoke...not much fire.
    Mature trees were basically unaffected.

    The mystery remained:
How was that fire started and who did it?

At the Emergency Board Meeting that was the hot topic. [heh]

I held my peace for awhile, listening.
    Finally, I said:

"Look it was probably some asshole at the range.
Either he was firing some XM855 steel penetrators at the 200 yard steel silhouettes (which you ain't supposed to do)...
    ...and set off some sparks...
    OR
...he was firing tracers (you can buy 'em, you know).
When the fire started, he bugged out."

    :notsure:

Not Me! Thought a few people might find it interesting.

Possibly the new pope and young world record non typically elk. Taken a few months ago here in Alberta. I had heard about it and finally found some pictures in one of the local hunting forums.
