I was 15 and working part-time at a meat market. I saved up enough to buy my first car. A '72 Buick Skylark. But still no license and very little driving practice. My parents went out of town for a few days and I decided to drive to K-Mart to buy a cassette player for it. I managed to get there and back without killing anyone, and installed the stereo. My dad was more observant than I gave him credit for. Next time he took me out for lessons he noticed it and grounded me for life.

The first time I drove on the road I was 11 or 12.

My cousin took me out in his 1987 (?) Toyota pick up, extended cab, long bed, 2wd, 5 speed.

Whenever they'd work on it, I would sit in the driver's seat and practice shifting gears.

One day, my cousin said, "if you're gonna shift those gears, why don't you just start it and drive the damn thing!"


I laughed, he laughed. Then he told me to get in the other seat and he drove us out in the country, shut it off and told me to get us home. I had no clue where we were or how to get home. We ended up driving around rural Indiana and Ohio for about 6 hours, stopping in to little hole-in-the-wall places in these tiny little towns. We bought cigarettes and beer. The cigarettes came easy, but the beer took a few stops to get.

Yep. Coming up on 1500 pages. We could have used that more wisely. We could have been in the 3rd gen section telling people to learn to use the search box.
