    We used to go for lobster off NJ. The dive boat untied at 20:00. Motor out awhile to the ‘rock piles’, over the rail by 22:00.

    When you’re ‘hunting’ lobsters you use a wiper blade insert and a light. You shine the light in the hole and poke ‘em in the face with the wiper blade. As long as you keep wiggling it, they hang on. Pull ‘em outta the hole and stuff ‘em in the bag. Easy peasy.

    Now, of course it’s dark, cold, stiff current and visibility is crap, so before you leave the anchor you tie off a hand reel to find your way back. Also, Jersey divers have a saying: ‘same ocean, same buddy’. You’re on your own.

    I had filled my bag and was reeling back to the anchor line, but my reel got fouled, so I settled on the bottom and was on my knees fiddling with the rats nest of string, bag of agitated ‘game’ clipped to me and a couple of tethered dive lights just sort of swirling around in the murky Atlantic Ocean…..

    when he cruised in to check me out it felt like standing on the yellow line when the express commuter train comes flying through the station.

    I got out of the water and gave the 1st mate $20 for cutting my shit off the anchor.
