Octane is a whole other question.

Using premium if the engine isn't set up for it is, at best, a waste of money.
The manual for my Echo chainsaw says to use 89 octane.
I use 90 octane ethanol free...cuz that's all I can get, and I won't use corn gas in an engine that small.
Trust @1buzzbait when he says small engines don't like corn gas.

BTW, if you do a search, I bet you can find a gas station nearby that sells ethanol free gas.
That's especially true in farm country.

Many engines in modern vehicles have, of course, variable valve timing...like the engine in my Tacoma.
So use what you want in those vehicles, and you will get a small performance boost...if that matters.

But at worst, using premium high octane gas can have ill effects on some engines.
    Follow me here.

I used to be very active on a Kawasaki forum and this subject got beat to death.
BTW, the forum had many experienced motorcycle mechanics as contributing members.
I'm going to talk about one engine in particular: the V-Twin on the Kawasaki 800 cruiser.
    (I still own an 800B).
It's an older carbed engine, no longer in production.

The engine is rated for 87 octane.
It has been shown, to my mind conclusively, that using high octane gas in that engine can contribute to carbon buildup.
A common problem for that engine.
It seems the design makes it somewhat prone to this...but never mind.
Eventually, it will get to the point of occasional detonation as some of that carbon breaks off.
As you can imagine, that ain't good.

Ever hear of an Italian tune-up?
That's how I make sure I'm ahead of the problem.
I've done the valve clearance check a couple times (which requires removing the cylinder heads).
    No significant carbon buildup.

Anyway, if Buzz or anyone else wants to correct me or add something, be my guest.
