No, they didn’t swipe it. It’s 70 years older than the Nevada city.

You would think that a .300 BlackOut round could not chamber in a .223/ 5.56 mm.
And under normal circumstances, it can't.

The trouble is, the case length of the .300 BO is shorter than the parent cartridge, i.e. it's essentially a cut down .223 case.
    More of that below.

This chart is confusing as to parent case, unfortunately.
The essential point is that head dimensions of the cartridges are the same (or close enough for a BO cartridge to fit a .223 bolt).
Bullet and neck diameter are not the same.
Cartridge overall lengths listed are the maximum allowable per the specs.

Again, a .300 BO should not be able to chamber.
Nevertheless, there are credible reports that it has happened, with disastrous results.
    Why?

The most plausible explanation seems to be that several things have to happen:

    1) The .300 BO cartridge is loaded with the lightest (shortest) bullet standard for the cartridge.
I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong), that would probably be a V-Max 110 grain bullet.
    2) Strong buffer spring
    3) Bullet setback in the cartridge (under force /velocity of strong buffer spring) when loading the round.
Recall that per the above chart, the case length is shorter for the .300 BO.

    4) Maybe a minor point, but 5.56 chambers are very slightly more "generous" than .223 chambers.
The vast majority of AR-15s sold nowadays are chambered as 5.56 mm.

The fact remains that the question is an ongoing controversy.

Thank you sir! :hattip: That was rolling around in my head last night. I bet that’s why a lot of folks have the ejection port covers that are labeled 300 AAC.

i would have already jumped on that wagon but I didn’t want yet another caliber to reload! But a subsonic suppressed short-barrel BO would be amazing…
    Good morning inmates! :hattip:
