    In his letters to friends, Tolkien says he intended to create (or re-create) a mythology for Europe using old pre-Christian traditions.
    BTW, Tolkien was in his day the foremost expert on Beowulf, fluent in many languages, some of them ancient.

    Wait (I hear you saying), wasn't Tolkien a devout Catholic?

    Yes he was.
    But he "demoted", so to speak, the old Pagan Gods to the status of angels or demons.
    Underlying his work are questions on the nature of good and evil, also mortality.
    He doesn't hit you over the head with it though.
    You're free to just read his books for pleasure, and they're ripping good stories too...

    @BarcelonaTom67 mentions Tom Bombadil.
    That character is an enigma.
    He's definitely good, but seems to be something of a free lancer.
    I kinda think Tolkien was just having fun with him.

    we are! This weekend coming up will be our really last relaxing time. Season ends on October 15th. It takes us a good 3 - 4 weeks to break everything down and clear the grounds for the season. We miss it when we're gone but April comes fast.
