Cold Iron is a Naval Engineering term for the propulsion plant is shutdown and hotel services are being received from the pier. Retired Navy I started in the Nuclear Power program so that would imply that I nuke food  OK occasionally I do... :D

I prefer Bald Eagles damn those turkey vultures are ugly. But I have been known to take pictures of them too, even they need love.

That is with a 300mm lens and 1.4tc for 420mm. What a great shot you made with your phone!

Sighh rub it in. Been to Guam a number of times, couple of my friends, also retired Navy, have homes in Hawaii and spend 6 months Stateside and 6 months in Oahu. Easy enough to tell which 6 months. I spent 6 months in Pearl that was long enough for me on a rock.

Hmmm day 34 of this winter with below zero temperatures. 33 days below zero is average so guess that is average. 9+ inches more white shit this weekend predicted. Let me think about that and get back to you LOL.

About the birds male or female identification, males are stuck in the bird world being the "peacock" and usually brighter and more flamboyant. And the females usually drab and plain looking. Totally different than humans.

    Male Baltimore Oriole

Or the female grosbeak compared to the male

And a female hummer will kick the snot out of a male that is not welcome.

Of course there is that Chinese invasive species the ringneck pheasant. Males are easy enough to identify and only sex allowed to shoot. Unless planted by the State or a game farm. Wild phez populations in South Dakota and North Dakota is still the best show on Earth although not what it used to be after so much CRP loss.

Ruff grouse and many other American native game birds however you can't identify the sex even on close inspection.

Lot of deer hunters on here. Anyone else spend all year training and work with their dog to hunt upland birds?

I pretty much just stick to bowhunting. Try to go as much as possible then wait 8 months for it to come back in. I've pretty much quit hunting with guns other than the occasional coyote.

Yeah I gave up guns for the bow a long time ago. Now I look at deer season as an interruption to bird season. Not going to have a dog in the woods that was bred to look like a red fox when the if it is brown it is down crowd is out with guns.

Less than 30 miles from me is the Pope and Young HQ and museum

It is here for good reason. Most of the record P&Y mounts are from either here or in Wi. across the river in Buffalo County.

Looking at all the bows on the wall noticed they didn't have my bow a Darton MX50 the first 50% let off compound. Told the curator that I still had mine and he asked if I would donate it. Didn't shoot broomsticks back then 2117 XX75's were just about right. He asked if I would donate guess I should. Not like I am going to shoot it anymore. Changes happen as you get older. And I used to live for deer season nothing was more important.

Didn't really understand what Gene and Barry Wensel meant by River bottom bucks until I moved here. It is the Mississippi River bottoms they were talking about. They have since moved from Mn. to Iowa where non residents have to apply by lottery for an archery tag. Some real pigs all over this area. Rather hunt birds and take pictures of deer with the camera. Don't have to gut the bastards and drag them out with the camera. Did I just say that out loud?!
