Ever hear of Allan Holdsworth?
Most people haven't, but many well known musicians cite him as a major influence.
He despised most popular music and was never interested in writing any, so that had something to do with his relative obscurity.

Frank Zappa once said that Allan Holdsworth was the most interesting guitarist on the planet.
Others said he came up with chords nobody had ever heard before.

I once saw him in concert and didn't know it until years later.
He was in a short lived progressive band called Tempest, which opened for Fleetwood Mac in their early 1973 tour.
Anyway, he was on two albums by the legendary Jazz-Fusion band New Tony Williams Lifetime.
He was briefly in the band U.K., and appeared on albums by Jean Luc Ponty, among many others.
