    What size generator you got?

    I have two:

A 5500 watt Generac, from my days of trim subcontracting.
The trouble is, it uses nearly 5 gallons of gasoline in 8 hours and I only keep 20 gallons of stabilized ethanol free gas on hand.
    And it's loud AF

A couple years ago, I got a 2000 watt Wen (Yamaha 2000 clone).
It uses one gallon at half load in a little over 7 hours... big difference.
It's adequate to run my pellet stove (primary heat) plus a microwave and a couple minor things like a phone charger.
Only 51 decibels... another big difference

If the power were to be out for days, the contents of the fridge can be placed in coolers and put in my unheated shop.
We have a couple old oil lamps for light.

We're old hands here at the Winter thang and don't mind... much :)

    Also:
    - Propane backup heat (doesn't need electricity)
    - 4 cords seasoned hardwood for the hearth insert (last ditch emergency heat)
    - Two stage snowblower
    - Snow shovels, ugh
    - Blah blah

It can be fun to be snowed in without power, actually... if you're prepared.
No fun at all if you ain't

Personally, I don't think it makes economic sense to get a whole house backup generator...
... unless you got lots of money to throw around

Extended outages just aren't frequent enough to justify one.
A quiet little generator will do the business.

    :eek::eek::eek:

Do you really need 8500 watts?

I'd sell that big honker and get one of these:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XZX5FTR?ie=UTF8&th=1

Or this one, if you think you need more power:

    https://www.amazon.com/WEN-3600-Watt-Generator-Lightweight-56360i/dp/B0C1Q4K2G7?th=1

Equivalent Honda generators run over $1000 bucks

I've been meaning to sell my Generac, but haven't gotten around to it.
I'll probably end up giving it away.
