My thing about pets is I have cats who knock everything over and literally try to scale the walls sometimes. I'd love to be able to have a shotgun or something sitting in the corner against the wall, but I don't think that's an option. There are other rooms I can put something in and close the door, but in an emergency, I don't wanna go wandering around the house so much.

I don't have kids, but I have nieces and a nephew of varying ages from teens to 2 year olds. I'm not sure I even want to tell their parents unless I have to, cause I suspect they might be against the idea, but it's also not their property or their decision. But it feels like it could be unsafe not to mention it.

 

I feel like it really depends on the kids/their parents..

I rarely have children in my home but the few times I do, they are from households that instructed them on proper firearm safety so I don't worry
The youngest one was nailin' deer with her rifle by the time she was like 9

@Gen1TacoLady are copious amounts of target practice in your future? handgun, neat tidy yet, you need to shoot a lot, to maintain some level of accuracy which means you have to buy moar handgun ammo which maybe available, but not necessarily cheep, now throw in an intruder, shotgun, point in the general direction of center mass, game over.

Shotguns usually have a manual safety - safety on would negate the cat doing anything bad
They are also much harder for a kid to manipulate [vs handgun]

I keep mine loaded but not chambered, mostly because I wanna give the intruder a few seconds of hearing /click/click/ to decide if they wanna run or not - that ensures the gun can't just go off if some dumbfuck tried to mess with it

Put the shotgun in your closet when they come over; don't tell the parents unless you really wanna have that conversation
You also risk them not letting the kids come back/limiting your access to them so just be aware of this
