    which reminds me...

    Story Time with Gritto :)

The Golden Age of Cross Country

In the early '70s, Cross Country was the red headed stepchild of high school sports.
We never had more than a few spectators.
The girls' Field Hockey team got more spectators than us.
Nobody gave much of a crap about it, and neither did my team.
In fact, we took a perverse pride in that.
We considered ourselves a highly exclusive club

Our coach wasn't even a Phys Ed teacher.
We figured he picked up a few bucks doing it, cuz he didn't seem terribly interested.

Every practice started out with a 3 mile warm up run.
We had a shortcut through some woods where we had weed and Piel's Real Draft Quickies stashed :p
One time our coach spotted us coming out of the woods.
Somebody had snitched and he staked us out.

Our coach called us Potheads and Wieners.
"You Assholes are never gonna beat Camp Hill"

... and we never did :anonymous:
(They were a much bigger school)

We never lost to anybody else though.
Our league was pretty boring, it was like all the meets were predestined :notsure:

I have limitations on the concoctions I put inside my body and I think syrup dipped pop tarts crosses some sort of unwritten boundary. Some of them are even too sweet for me to try. I skipped on the strawberry milkshake flavor for that reason.

Oh definitely lol. That's a good one. I only picked out a few ones I've never tried since they were on sale otherwise I probably wouldn't touch the stuff. Brown sugar cinnamon is the best though.

I agree that most of his movies don't hold up very well.
Particularly the dozens of forgettable cowboy movies he appeared in during the '30s and '40s.
So many, in fact, that he ran the risk of becoming a caricature of himself.

I'd argue, however, that there were a few exceptions.
The ones I voted for all rank on nearly all of the best movies of all time lists.

The difference is that those movies were not just vehicles for John Wayne.
All involved top directors and were not written for John Wayne, as such.
In They Were Expendable, he wasn't even the top billed actor.

Nevertheless, they showed that he was capable of turning in a good performance.
