I was thinking about how @StayinStock hates country music.
I mean, what you hear on the radio when you're in the Dollar General.
I hate it too.

I was thinking about why that is.
I've come to the conclusion that Nashville has ruined it.
Commercialization...I know, how trite.

Robert Plant (yes, that Robert Plant...ahem...Led Zeppelin) did an interview a dozen or so years ago.
It was about his collaboration with Alison Krauss.
He said music doesn't seem to come from anywhere any more.
No sense of place.
Nothing from earlier generations handed down intact, or mostly intact.

He went into Appalachia looking for "authentic" music.
He says he heard songs there that his great great great grandfather probably heard in England.
Only preserved in a place where families have been rooted for generations.
Songs from England, Ireland, Scotland, whatever.
And traditional American songs that stemmed directly from those sources.

He wasn't talking about Bluegrass really, which is a style of its own.
Though I confess I like Bluegrass.
It has authenticity.
Every Sunday from Spring through Autumn, a Bluegrass band plays in the little park within walking distance from my house.
Paid for by the Township.
They come mostly from Virginia and West Virginia.
These bands are generally composed of extended families.
