most rifle/scope packages are not worth it...good glass on the top of your rifle will make the difference from a good rifle and an amazing rifle.

    IMO that is :D

Remington 25-06 Sendero. Fast, flat shooting caliber with plenty of downrange energy. Teamed with a good 100gn. bullet, awesome.

.223 is good for Wild Boar. I never heard of anyone using .223 for Deer though.. You want A round with weight when it comes to deer hunting.. I bought A .270 specifically for Deer.

    .270 vs .223

x2, brother has a savage package, hes killed deer with it and for the money it was a hell of a deal. but you do get what you pay for. that being said you dont need a 1000 dollar scope for deer huntin. nikon makes great affordable scopes to top any rifle. i like my nikon better than my leupold which cost 3x what the nikon did.

That would be an accurate gun but probably too heavy for something you'd want to take into the woods with you, plus that scope is pretty big for a deer gun.

For the guy who said 223 is good for boar, IMO you'd be insane to try boar hunting with something that small. A boar is built way tougher than a deer.

Also, I'd go with a 24 inch barrel at the longest, maybe even a 20 inch. You can get what you want but the guys on here telling you to go with a 7mm mag or 300 or whatnot are just trying to prove their dicks are bigger than the rest of us. Seriously, for a 1st deer gun don't get anything bigger than 308, especially for east coast deer. I lived in VA for a long while and did a decent amount of hunting there. I'd say it would be an exception to get a shot much over 100 yards in most places you can use rifles down there.

As for the scope/rifle combos, there isn't anything wrong with them and they can make setting up your first gun a little easier. Even low priced scopes now are going to work well, if its a name brand it's going to be fine for anything except the most extreme conditions.

This IMO would be a good first deer gun: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=304718820

That gun does have the accu-trigger and the barrel is 20, maybe 22 inch. Would be a solid deer rifle.

Anything from a 243-300win mag will work on deer with correct bullet choice. I have a 300win mag I use for deer but I wouldnt suggest getting that as a first deer gun. Before you choose look at the cost per box of ammo because that will play a real big role into how much you practice. I reload so I dont worry to much about that anymore.

I like savages they are making the most budget friendly crazy accurate guns right now. I tend to stay away from used online gun auctions I like to be able to really inspect a used gun before I buy one. Plus new savages arent that much more expensive than the starting bid on that gun. But remember you still have to put glass on the new gun. I am partial to redfield glass it has worked well for me and it is reasonably priced. Plus you have to figure your max shot distance in jersey will be 250 or 300 yards if you are lucky so you dont have to go crazy on the scope. A good quality scope is good but you dont need a 1000+ scope. A $200 to $300 scope should work just fine for everything you would need.

Good luck looks like you are going with a 308 which is more than enough for deer and you have lots of avaliable options for ammo.

Can you tell if it is a heavy barrel or not?

I'd say check with your local gun shop to see what they have. When I was looking in the spring our local gun shops had brand new Savage rifles for less than these you are looking at.

    http://www.beikirchs.com

I think I was quoted in the 400-540 range depending on the model for a brand new accu trigger savage combo. They were coming with the Nikon bdc scope at the time.

Ruger American Rifle syn and they have an adjustable trigger. Walmart has them for $357 and they come in 243, 270, 30-06,& 308. I just picked one up a 30-06 for $340 and bought a Leupold VX-1 $220. For under $600 I have an awesome deer hunting package.
