If I want to do that, I will go to a different platform, not a Tacoma

The transmission isn't the problem. The 3.5 engine needs a lot of rpm's to get power. The transmission needs to constantly shift to keep the engine rpm in the best rpm for power. Don't use 6th gear unless you're on the open road and at speeds over 65.

That doesnt work well either. The motor is way too underpowered to run a double overdrive. I drove from SF-LA ON highway 5 and almost every rise or elevated section of roadway, Id have to shift to 4th.

Mild Drive / Spicy ECT - current setting.

I had my Sport 4 months and did not experience gear hunting before logging in TW.

I'll use ECT in D when I want quicker acceleration.

I use S4/S5 on random occasion just to engage...also engage 4H to make sure the system gets its monthly usage.

That was my round about way to suggest a different vehicle/platform. Really these are just glorified cars. I have had mine since 2019, and I have come to understand it's quirks, and limitations. I love the truck but, the trans/cruise control logic sucks the big donkey wiener. Throw a trailer on it of almost any weight, and it is worse. Ski

I'm only going to address one of your issues and that is "downhill compression hold back". I have noticed the same thing and think it probably exists on most all new vehicles, particularly those with an AT. This is how Toyota and I imagine most other manufactures make their gas milage goals with the FEDs. I notice how nice it is to get back into my 1986 MT vehicle.

    S mode

    S2 for sub 20s

    S3 for 20-40

    S4 for 45-60

    S5 for 65-75

Keeps truck about between 2000-3000rpms which is a good place for the power band.

The variable valve timing changes at 3500rpms, above that is the power band.
Lugging this engine below 3000rpms makes the shifting worse.

Im sure it does change at 3500 being a vvt system and all. It also creates a wider powerband.

I should probably edit my statement as I drive between 2500-3500. I dont go above 3000 often usually when passing, getting on a freeway.

    2500-3000 is my typical.

Anyway my point, i disagree with you.

I would tend to agree but when the speed limit is 20-25, the trans in 2nd is like 12-1500, so it’s futility at best

I put it in S mode too. Only way to make the truck behave.

Ryan, I think youre absolutely right. In fact I never noticed any improvement or any changes for that matter. I wish there was someone I could take it to to do an upload near me (bay area, California)

I drive from LA to Sacramento on I5 twice monthly during ng duck season and have the same experience. I'm in in 6th gear going under 85 mph the truck downshifts on every slight incline. Throw in some wind and you're doomed.

The tune won't make it a race car, but you will notice it now feels like you'd expect a truck to fell. The HP and torque gains are not astronomical as they are designed to not over stress the engine.
