Depends on how much you plan on towing, but I think majority will say any Tacoma will do the job especially if you have the V6 with tow package.

Does the SR have the factory tow package + V6? If so, then either/or I bet.

    Mostly stuff I built.
The OR is going to have the 8.75” rear differential and the SR is going to have an 8” rear differential. In general a larger diff is going to live longer for towing duty.

    Either will do the job.

The SR will look better doing it..... :anonymous:

If you are concerned with towing performance and willing to spend the coin for an OR....get a Tundra.

In my shopping around, I was surprised to find that because Totota gives rebates on Tundras, they could be had for cheaper than a Tacoma!

Can't find anywhere in the Toyota manual where it states the SR rear axle is different than the other models? they all have the same 9.4" of ground clearance? am I missing something?

Most likely this, but I will tell you that the OR has a larger rear differential due to the locking mechanism. If you think bigger = better, get the OR.

    What will you be towing?

SR5 with the factory tow package does well. Everyone here forgets the SR5.

All Manual Trans Versions along with Off Road and Pro have the larger 8.75" Rear.

Models with either manual transmission, factory e locker, or both, have an 8.75 inch axle. All other 3rd gens have the 8 inch axle. All OR models have the factory locker, some SR(5) have manual transmissions.

In the 3rd Gen no SR5 had a Manual and unfortunately the SR Manual was eliminated for 2018.

I didn't think 1-1.5" was that big either for the tires..

    SR and SR5 use 245/75/16 = 30.5 in tall
TRD OR use 265/70/16 = 30.6 in tall

Tire width difference is 0.8 in.
