Yeah its not the best... but its a truck. The truck I learned to drive on got 14-16MPG. I find that if you drive normally I average around 19-21. Hell if I have a long day at work I find myself getting 23. I want to make it clear that I'm not a slow driver, I routinely beat the piss out of it to get to Fire calls. But even then I still get 17-18 MPG. Are these numbers to low for everybody? What considered good MPG for a midsized truck? Maybe I'm getting spoiled by 2.10 gas prices...

I think getting 20+ is less normal. If I feathered my gas and had little to no hills, I could get 20, but usually I was around 14-16. At those numbers, I could be driving a Tundra or my Raptor and get same or better. If I feathered the clutch with little to no hills on my Tundras or Raptor, I could also get close to 20. For a small truck, the numbers are generally pretty abysmal.

Maybe its because from the looks of your truck you have a after market lift kit, tires, and wheels... Am I wrong?

Yeah, I'm lifted. I also ran 37s on my Tundra and the Raptor was on 35s stock. My point is the mileage is similar to a full-size truck, lifted or not. I would expect way better from a small truck.

Are you saying that a truck with 13 city stock probably significantly less with 37's is comparable to a truck that gets 19 city?

No I'm suggesting that my real world experience with two different Tundras on 37s gets similar mileage to my Tacomas stock or lifted (I've had three different Tacomas, lifted and stock).

I agree here. Now mine is still new and may change. Only 5,000 mile on her. No lift but 6% larger tires 275/65/18's.
I drive 70% Hwy and about 30% city. I can baby the hell out of this thing and have only once have I got 18.9 mpg. Which should equate to 20.03 mpg with the 6% larger tire. Normal driving which I would say I'm a fairly easy driver, right at 17 every tank. So 18 with the tire size calculated in.

It doesn’t matter anyways, as I tend to keep my trucks for a long time, I figure this will be the last gasoline powered vehicle I own. Sure hope the replacement electric one has some range and comes in 4wd. 16mpg loaded to the hilt with a 360mile range, I’m happy for now.

Maybe it comes down to unknown factors... road conditions, altitude, different trim. Because I'm not experiencing the same thing as you.

I have no idea the mpg's I get or have gotten on any vehicle that I've owned. Never checked. If I'm near or below a 1/4 tank, I fill it up.

Here in the Midwest with winter blend and colder air Temps, I get about 14-15mpg!

Likewise the only reason I bring it up is because everybody is always complaining about it.

Possibly. Could be the extra drag created by my hood skewp.

I have a 2.5" lift, 285/70R17 tires and average 18.6MPG and on highway get 21 average.

Looking at Fuelly.com the average for ALL midsize trucks are around 18MPG, so no matter what midsize truck you get, your driving is going to impact that MPG more then anything else.

I think the reason people are complaining is because for the engine/power anyrhing less than 18 is crazy esp when you have v8s capable of getting 18-20.

But I could care less, I also occasionally take off all Trac and have a little snow driving fun so I'm sure that doesn't help my mileage haha.

Couple thousand Tacoma's on Fuelly. Average is 19 mpg. Note that the dudes on Fuelly are probably a bit lighter on the throttle. For everyone getting more, there is someone getting less. For a midsize truck I guess that is ok, but it is below what most full size trucks get. For example the F150 w/2.7 and about 100 more horsepower and more capacity gets.....the same. A bunch of people think just because the Taco is midsize it will get better mileage. It doesn't. My 2nd Gen 4x4 and 3rd Gen 4x4 both got about the same mileage as my full size w/small V-8. I think that is why some (a few?) are disappointed in the Taco's overall performance, especially the power and mileage. These truck are designed to be reliable, not fuel efficient. Living with the mpgs on a Tundra will be a shocker too!
