I'm hearing lots of nasty comments about the new Gen 4's. 8-speed transmission troubles, electrical problems and a host of lesser issues. Is this all for real? I have test driven a 2024 model and I thought it drove very well. I love the max torque at 1,700 RPM part as I am thinking of buying a 3,300lb trailer and our 2017 Gen 3 isn't up to towing that kind of weight.

What is real and what is rumour?

Quality control built in Mexico. Too many electronics. First year of a new vehicle. There are plenty of videos online showing some awful panel gaps in many of them. That's a QC issue. Give them a few more years. It would be foolish to buy a new Tacoma right now.

Idk, just had my 20k service done, haven’t had any troubles this year. There is a tsb for the brake line on the offroad which they don’t have a fix for yet, essentially it’s too close to the inside of the wheel on the 17” wheels and mud can build up and rub. There have been a few transmission failures related to servo sticking issues I believe. Not sure what else, same as the last gen, bugs get worked out as we go.

edit: guy above is funny, the biggest issues on the third gen happened on 22-23 model years, Tacomas have been built in Mexico for years and years, they are either going to be built by Mexicans in Mexico or Mexicans in Texico. I say hop in, the truck is great and if there are issues, at least Toyota will fix unlike a 2017 which is likely out of any warranty at this point

The 22-23s have more issues because that's when they moved production to Mexico to make room in Texas for the new Tundra and Sequoia.

That is abjectly false, the third gen has been made in Mexico from the start, I know because I had one mfg in guanajuanto

edit: they have been mfg exclusively in Mexico since 2005

What’s this supposed “biggest issue” asking as a guy who’s had a 16,17,19,20 and 22 (which has had the least quirks/things).

Incorrect not exclusively. They also were manufactured in Texas.

What are the problems being seen on ‘23s? I’ve got one and would like to know what to watch out for.

And I thought ‘16s were supposed to the worst.

He’s talking out his *** more “issues” in first 2 years. A lot of part updates and additional fixes (frame weak points for corrosion) in later years. I’ve almost had every year 3rd gen.

Idk but the 4runner fan boys for the 6th Gen makes it sound like they’re amazing and better than ever even tho they’re not

Nah, just the exploding diff issue, the rest from early third gen weren’t any different than what we’re seeing now

idk about long term reliability on this engine and could care less its a 4cyl but it will require more maintenance and has more fail points, for me the new gens are just so cheap feeling and the short comings with QC, etc are very obvious given the stupid price point, the fact 24s are still on lots with advertised 10% off even halo trims should speak to how most feel.

What are you talking about, rear diff issues were early years and not common at all, most were a howling noise now considered normal or leaky. The last recall was a welding debris issue on the axle nut and most were unaffected and didn’t result in an exploding diff.

Idk if it has anything to do with how it feels, it feels better than my third gen’s… I think it’s mostly crappy financing 8% rates and 50k for basic amenities but consumers are coming around because of other companies are at the same price points. My neighbor just bought a Colorado trail boss something or other and was in the same 50k ballpark

Except rates are 4-5 right now on new (was just shopping GX for my wife) and Tacoma has special apr at 3.99 and 4.99 with a $6-8k discount.

Problem too is perception. I bought my 2017 Tacoma new for 30k OTD. The prices today have moved up too fast
