    Thanks and agreed.

No one knows when the next disaster my strike or what form it will take. Better to have and not need than need and not have.

It doesnt have to be zombies or the russians invading. it can be used for natural disasters as well. look at hurricane katrina...a SHTF bag would have been useful in that situation. what if your traveling during winter and get stuck in a snow storm and dont get rescued for 12,24, or 48 hours? I be you'll wish you had a SHTF bag then, guy..

I think I'd add Roadside flares. You can use them to start a fire in the rain or snow. Bear banger kit. You can get them with signal flares and anything really, small portable.

I bet the people that evacuated from Katrina would've found some of the things listed in this thread handy, don't you think?

Maybe..... The way I see it, I'll be damned if I'm gonna worry about grabbing a bag when I need to help save myself, my family, and other people.

If you're on the verge of life & death situation (not medically) - water & food is all you really need to stay alive. If you have time to grab a bag with food/water in it, then you're not really in a life/death situation.

If people want to prepare, that's fine and I'm not knocking it. We just see things differently.

If, God forbid, some major disaster/emergency happens, there will be a lot of people that see things differently than I do, wishing they were as well prepared as I am.;)

Grabbing a bag that already has water and food in it takes no more time than grabbing a bag with many other items that could potentially save your life or avoid a life threatening situation. I have 3 different bug out kits that have been prepared years ago since 9/11 and are updated regularly.

Also, about the comment of owning gold? Bug out bags are not meant for things like a financial meltdown. They are meant for life threatening situations either man made or natural events. Gold will get you no where, and you sure as hell wont be lugging it around while you avoid hazardous situations. Whatever you think gold will buy you, I guarantee my weapon can take. Ammo, medication, and clean water will be the currency in these situations.

A lot of people look at this and think people like myself are the looney ones. What is so strange about being prepared for a disaster such as a nuclear detonation in your area, or a devastating earthquake etc. It has been proven time and again that when something even as minor as a hurricane impacts an area, society and all rules associated with it break down. Being trained and prepared for these things is logical. Those who ignore it or simply hope that the government will protect them are the loonies.

Better to have and not need....Besides, this stuff stays in my truck and my go bag stays in my house. Most of us werent alive to remember the Cuban Missile crisis, I remember hearing about it from my grandfather. The threats are still out there, and one day somethng will happen. I am not an alarmist by any means, but I like to be comfortable knowing that I can maintain provide for myself and a few others if need be. preparedness could be nothing more than knowing where to get clean water and having a few days of food on hand. I try to keep about 2 weeks worth for me and my dog. Check out Survivalblog.com for some good info. We are either ants or grasshoppers, I'll be damned if a grasshopper is going to steal the fruits of my labor and forward thinking.

My girlfriend and I had this conversation the other day. For some reason, we had War of the Worlds on and she asked what we would do in the event of major catastrophe, alien/zombie/Russian invasion, etc.

I told her we would jump in the Taco and head for the hills -- if possible.

Either that, or head downtown to start providing aid relief to people in need of assistance. Depends on traffic.

I don't keep a BOB, because, basically, that's kinda kooky to keep a stockpile of ammo and MREs. We've got emergency preparedness backpacks in each car (water, flashlights, batteries, space blankets, etc.) and my survival gear is all located in one place in the house.

Personally, I like to travel light and I'm plenty versed on how to live off the land, so I save weight by ditching heavy blankets, shoes, excessive layers, etc. In my opinion, speed is more valuable than comfort/situational preparedness. I also don't stockpile ammunition, because in the event of any of those scenarios, two people aren't going to fight off hordes of anything. And ammo is fucking heavy. I just have a rifle and sidearm, and enough rounds to not be burdensome.

To be quite honest, the people I would worry the most about in survival situations are other "survivalists" who become "opportunists," and want what I have. As long as I have a flint and steel, a water bottle and a pair of shoes, I'm fine. Everything else I can get from nature.

Except, of course, in the event of nuclear fallout. Then we're all screwed.

In my SHTF world, there will be opportunities to secure food, water, and transportation, possiblity safe haven if you have something of value to exchange.
Cash is not something of value, in that scenario.
    I live in a volcanoe/earthquake zone.
I believe I'm preparing for that possibility.
BTW, you can get farther in life with gold and guns than you can with just guns.

To each his own, because until we are faced with such a situation no one really knows what it will be like. Like the poster above says, he worries about the oppurtunist who wil ltake advantage of such a scenario. Well the best way to fend off such an oppurtunist is by being well armed and trained in avoiding those situations, but also being prepared to fend off an attack by any means necessary. Being armed, including ammuntion is really the only way to do that. I guess I am "kooky", looney, or whatever but I am confident in my preparation for a survival scenario.

Concerning the gold issue, I still disagree, but respect your opinion and as I said, no one really knows.

I keep thinking of the movie, The Book of Eli. In that movie, the most valuable things anyone could have were chapstick, wetnaps, and sunglasses. I never thought of that, but it goes to show that the author had a different idea of surviving.

I think the composition of your kit depends on your philosophy/expectations of what you will encounter in the need of its use.

If you're planning on being in areas with population -- then I would think that a significant amount of ammunition would be beneficial. However, that type of load prohibits nimble movement, and requires a stronghold to house/defend it.

I personally prefer the ability to alter my location/interaction/detection rapidly, so I prefer a lighter load. Planning for human interaction is prudent, but having the ability to adjust quickly to meet them on my grounds is far more important to me than being able to slug it out in a firefight.
