Are the stock exhausts galvanized or stainless? I've heard scrubbing them with toilet bowl cleaner cleans the rust spots off, but I don't want to damage it if it's galvanized steel.

Edit: Some more research shows that toilet bowl cleaner contains hydrochloric acid which will damage the chromium finish in stainless steel. Do Not Use! I'm doing some more reading about using phosphoric acid cleaners on stainless steel.

Edit 2: @GQ7227 Here's my shopping list for my exhaust restore project. Being in AZ all I have is some light corrosion, discoloration and stains on the exhaust pipe.

I've used high temp paint before on a muffler/mid-pipe, didn't really help. especially since they will rust from the inside out before outside in (moisture trap) if you don't run longer sustained drives.

Also, be prepared for days of stank smell as it cures the paint :puke:

my new exhaust and tip picked up some nasty gritty black salty stuff in CO at +11k feet on I-70 at the end of January, it wiped off ok but i have some 'special' chrome polish with brass wool to clean it up, I honestly do not recall how the stock exhaust sounded on my truck since the muffler had a nice side-splitting hole through it for a number of years :anonymous:
if i find some time from the other taco projects i can 'try' to restore the old OEM as an 'artifact' lol once you figure out the right combo of products to use

I thought about buying a brand new take off 3rd gen but the inlet/outlet isn't really set up for our trucks.

I got mine shipped to Hawaii for about $160ish with a 20% off + free shipping coupon.

I have a third gen muffler on my truck and muffler shop can install. I paid 20 bucks for 3rd gen muffler off craiglist it was essentially brand new and another 20 bucks for a muffler shop to weld it in.

no, but i can certainly try with this newish tablet i recently got, i think it has a sound recording, just need to figure how to operate it

what type of sound are you looking for? its super quiet as far as i can tell with no noticeable drone at high speed
@Luv my yota has this setup as well and can perhaps comment on any increased hp gains over stock, my stock had a nice split and leak in it, so changing it definitely gave me some hp gains lol

Not gonna give any gains of stock. Just from idle up to about 3k.

It does give extra horsepower but only a little, it’s when you add this to deck plate or elbow, with headers and tuneup you’ll see an improvement.

1997 2.7 Installed a JBA SS Cat back exhaust with a magna flow muffler. Fit was perfect and kit came with a JBA stainless muffler but sold it and used the magna flow instead, much quieter. I dislike loud exhausts and now it purrs. The muffler in the exhaust kit would of had a louder note but the magna flow has an exhaust note similar to the stock muffler. Also using a Factory mini-header and stock cat. Motor runs strong with loads of top end. Best performance mod I ever made, and the motor breathes well with a completely stock motor/intake with the factory header.
