Hey guys, I recently bought a 2021 Tacoma SR5 and it is a 4x2. I was curious can I go off roading in it? I would assume if yes I would just have to change the tires...

Yes, you are allowed. Whether you get stuck is a different question.

Yes you can. Just make sure to go with people who know the trail so you know if that trail requires 4wd. Or find reviews of trails.

Of course you can, just gotta know limitations of your truck. Try it out on some FSRs first and get a feel for it. Better tires help a ton of course and better if you dont go alone in a 2wd truck.

    Good luck!

Get real tow points (front and rear) to get you out of trouble. You can do fire trails, dirt roads, hard pan. Stay away from mud and deep loose sand/gravel.

At the very least, if you're going to get on loose material, air down a lot (15 psi) and don't stop moving in sand if you possibly can avoid stopping. I've learned all of these the hard way in my 2010 PreRunner.

Ground clearance, wheel travel, and a few skills at the controls and picking a line will get you through a lot of stuff, but there are definitely things a 2WD can't do, even with a locker (climbing ledges is a big one). Also I only go out when it's dry, since power to every wheel can be very important in mud, snow or ice.

Definitely don't be like me and go out alone. I only did it cause I have a winch and thought I was going to do a familiar trail; I called an audible and did a different run, ended up with a $700 repair bill after being really dumb and driving over my rope.

We have lead multiple 2wd Tacomas around various trails in Arizona via State48offroad, some trails being 5-6/10 difficulty (based on Tacomas ability, not crawler trails) bone stock you are still capable of a lot, but clearance and tires will be you biggest setbacks in the stock 2wd. just keep the momentum and drop some tire pressure and you will do fine after some practice!

Depending on the trail or roads you want to explore you should be fine. I’ve been all over my local mountains and the desert in So.Cal. In my 2wd trucks. Off-roading is really more about the driver and technique then it is the running gear.

I would suggest you go when it’s dry and go with another vehicle. And if you do get stuck, don’t mash the gas and spin your tires!

Stock suspension... minivan tires .. 4x2 probably not the greatest idea .. but what the hell why not .

Just bring a shovel and a spotter or a friend with a 4x4 and you should be able to do mild stuff no problem.

Whats wrong with stock suspension? Its still 9.4" clearance like the 4x4. A lot of people wheel in a 2wd (pre runner) truck. Driver mod is all that matters.

    It is just money...
Why not give it a swing? I've through a few "high clearance" campsite loops in CO populated by cars that looks like they should have never made it that far.
