In my experience you usually get the best deal from buying a vehicle in stock. I sometimes wind up with more stuff than I want but if it's cheaper than the lower level version I wanted I go for it.

Ok, here's a question - I want a Green TRD Pro AT. I don't want steps (going to get some sliders) but I want a bunch of the bed accessories (locking tailgate, cleats, bed extender, etc.) Are those accessories things that the dealers put on any Green TRD Pro AT that they get in? So in reality is the color/transmission the only thing that's going to be different on different TRD Pros, whereas the accessories can be ordered/installed at will?

With most makes, you don't order per-say.

You simply have requirements that may be available to one dealer or another.

So a Green TRD Pro "ordered" is usually just a dealer trade or wait for one to receive one.

You can buy a TRD Pro and have them remove the sidesteps, they will work with anyone to make a sale.

Where you live is going to have a lot to do with what you have available to you. Your profile says Tahoe, but 100 miles outside of Tahoe, includes Tahoe and Reno. Use cars.com and check Sacramento and even bay area, and I bet you'll find what your looking for.

Factory production is planned weeks in advance based on projected sales vs inventory. They can’t build this one for bob and the next one for John. The TRD OR is a package. Port and dealer addons are their dessert. You may or may not get them taken off.

Absolutely true, but it doesn't stop them.
Especially after they set the hook on someone dumb enough to believe them.

    Also true.
I guess we can say dealership employees are dumb and scummy, customers are dumb.

TacoBuffet is mostly right. But there is a way to special order one, but it will take a lot of time and your dealer may not want to bother trying to get it done for you. What most "special orders" are from Toyota dealers is simply a reallocation of a truck that is already being built. Each dealer starts the manufacturing year with a general list of the trucks they want and what Toyota plans to send them, and when. If you "special order" something they don't already have on the lot, what typically happens is that the dealer goes into their list of what is coming and finds one that matches your needs. Then they tell you to wait until that truck gets there. Or if they don't have one coming soon with the configuration you want, they will swap an allocated truck with another dealer.

In a few instances, there is simply not a way for them to do that. In my case, I was trying to get a DCLB from a Gulf States Toyota dealer. GST is a little different in that they request the allocation from Toyota and then distribute that to their dealers, versus the dealers working directly with Toyota. Back in late 2015 and early 2016, GST did not request any DCLB trucks from Toyota. Many of the salespeople at their dealerships were not even aware that the Tacoma was available in a DCLB, because they never saw any come through their dealerships. So there was no way for a GST dealer to "reallocate" another DCLB from another GST dealer. The only way they could get one for me was to request an additional truck to be built after the end of the planned production for the year. My understanding at the time is that GST does not like to do this and that it is a very rare thing for a dealer to get one approved. I ordered in late October and did not get my truck until mid March. I think the only reason they actually agreed to do it for me was that let them know I was looking at flying to a dealer outside of the GST territory to buy a DCLB if they couldn't get it for me.

I honestly doubt they would do an order like mine for a specific set of options somebody wanted. They will just try to get you close enough and then negotiate on price to get you there. I am pretty sure the main reason mine was accepted by GST was because it was a physical model that they simply didn't stock and couldn't reallocate at the time. GST was going to lose my sale to a dealer outside of their territory if they couldn't get me that model, so they agreed to do the order. Either way, the key is that if they do this kind of order, you won't get the truck until the regularly planned trucks for the model year have been finished and then Toyota will make these extra trucks that are requested. So if you try it, be prepared to be very patient as it may take a long time.

That's never been my experience. I've custom ordered many vehicles (obviously never a Toyota) and I've always gotten more for less than what was on the lot. Reason being is if I'm willing to wait for my order to come in (usually it's an extra 6-8 weeks but I've also had many months lead times on some vehicles), the dealer is happy to get a guaranteed sell. It helps them improve their numbers and/or helps them reduce what they have to order to meet their commitments with the mfg. We recently special ordered my wife a JLUR, sat down with the dealer and since we weren't able to find the options my wife wanted anywhere in the US, we went through and custom ordered it. The end was a Jeep that had more options than what most dealers would ever order and the price was less than those that were on the lot.
