What's so tough about special ordering a new Tacoma?

I’d use cars.com. Just filter on all your requirements. Sort by price to find the ones with the least add ons and see how far they are for you to get. If there are 2-3 different options get quotes and use them to leverage the best deal in an OTD price.

Thanks for the insight (most) everyone! Will check cars.com and search out a few smaller dealers in my area to visit in person. Also willing to wait until Summer, if that's what it takes.

Last question: MSRP for this vehicle, as built from Toyota's website is $37,125. How does one determine dealer invoice relative to the MSRP? There is also a delivery, processing and handling fee included in this price. Are any part of these fees generally negotiable? I'm less prone to negotiate small fees if I can get the vehicle that I want, built as I want.

Yeah I ran in to the same trouble as you bud, I wanted a 2016 Quicksand DCSB Off-road Tacoma with m/t, sun roof and tech package and I was paying in cash for it and I wanted one built in Texas not Baja and I only wanted the factory warranty, didn't want their bullshit rip off warranty at all, well I got told to F$%& off by 3 dealerships before finally getting one to agree with me and it took me 7 months of waiting to take possession of it. I found out they ONLY want to sell what's on the lot because they could careless about you and what you want and they ONLY want you to finance one because they make more money that way, and on the last month the guy I was working with got fired over everything also. I HATE dealing with dealerships. You just have to find someone willing to play ball, have patience and don't be afraid of walking out and trying another dealer until YOU get what you want. Just my experience, good luck bud!!

Delivery is paying the semi to haul it, handling and processing is generally a dealer cost for paper work, office girls,it may or may not be negotiable

All MT Tacoma's are built at the Texas Factory so you were already set for that portion, took about 4 months to get mine but it was worth the wait.

If only there was a option to pick it up at the factory yourself. I can drive it home for a lot less and have a fun road trip to top it all off.

I believe that is an option for anyone to do, could be wrong. I know that big Mike from Marlin crawler ordered it 16 and it took him 7 months until it was built and ready and he went and picked it up from the Texas factory and road tripped it home. It's all in his build thread.

Absolutely worth the wait on my end too, the manual transmission was by far the best option available for a Tacoma.
I did not know that about M/T and Texas, glad that worked in my favor. How's your 17 m/t holding up, any issues so far mechanically?

I was able to find a few on car gurus. My local dealership has one on the showroom floor with just the nerf bars added-on. It has $3,000 off for President's Day weekend still written on the windshield.

Damn y'all are making me feel blessed at the dealer I went to. Walked in and told them I wanted M/T, tech, and premium, and they had one on the lot in cav blue. Decided I didn't like the color so they found one at another dealer and arranged a dealer trade for me in MGM. Apparently as I 2as putting a deposit down on it, it was being sold. So they called me a couple days later and said they found another leaving the factory that they'll have reallocated to them. A couple more days later I called them and dedlcided I actually wanted cement and they tracked one down for me no questions or fighting. Thanks Pedersen Toyota!

Took 4 months to get what I wanted (‘20 2wd Sport auto short bed with only tech pkg, LED headlights and tonneau cover). I could not spec a Sport with only these options on the Toyota website.

Inventory mgr got on his speakerphone with the distributor while I was next to him and they got my non-standard truck build assigned to his dealership. Not a big deal. Ordered an AG Pro manual with nothing on it at the same time and that was no big deal either. Pro arrived in 3 months.

sort of the same situation with me in Houston in August 2015. 6 dealers said that a DCLB did not exist. One acknowleged it existed but stated they couldn't locate any in the united states. dealer stated he would order it the way i wanted but couldn't guarantee it would be built at it was the end on Gen II .

waited a month and kept looking online. Found 3 on eBay a month later at a dealership in Pennsylvania. Bought it from the eBay dealer (Laurel Toyota i believe) on eBay and paid 2500 less after delivery (from PA to my door in Houston) than i would have if I had the dealer "ordered" it. smooth transaction and they overnighted all the ppw and they took care of the registration part. the TX plates were sent to the house. never set foot in the dealer in PA.
keep looking youll find a way to get what you want.

I guess I got lucky. The exact truck I wanted was being offloaded from the semi that day.

Only down side, they sold me a truck someone else had put a deposit on. Ran into the dude at a gas station a week later he was PISSED at the dealer for selling his truck out from under him.

Well you want a configuration that about 3 people in the country might want. So you probably wont find it.

17 SR5 V6 4x4 AC AT tow pkg. Blue as they come
A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
At 2 of my local dealers --this could/did happen I knew I called and visited several dealers in Central and eastern Mo. I said I wanted their best price on a 17 SR-5 BBP 4WD AC with AT and the only option to be added would be Tow pkg. (was not a standard item in 17) nothing more. Several area dealers gave me a price and said nothing about not being able to get the exact truck. Their prices were just average. Then the dealer in Columbia gave me a great price and off I went to my local hometown dealer who had previously said they would "meet or beat" any price I found. It took 3 tries for the local dealer to hit the price --then it was EXACTLY what the Columbia dealer had said (told me they deal on percentage of mark-up figures). Then they started looking for that truck --nothing in the area or even scheduled for build. They found NONE like it.
Now call it what you want but the dealer (hometown) sent in some sort of paperwork and the "order" was put in the works of Toyota. This "process" may vary in some areas of the country where it seems some of the area distributers (SE area seems to do this) slap all kinds of "extra crap" on their trucks and say that is the "only way they come" -but that is in that specific area only. The two plants only make them in specific ways, and a lot of the add-ons are added at the various "ports" (understand they can't do odd stuff -like say add a sun-roof to a SR-5 - the factories have their limits as well).
Mine sat in the Kansas City area for 2 weeks "waiting" for NOTHING to be added. To add, I went with the hometown dealer as they are 3 miles from home, as opposed to 30 miles for the other. Both dealers here were very helpful and courteous ( Machens Toyota in Columbia and Riley Toyota in Jefferson City. I think once the dealers found out I knew exactly what I wanted and was NOT going to settle for anything else, they played the "game " my way. I also told them there could have been other options on the truck -only if I got them at ZERO cost to me (which they had to prove) Also I had NO trade-in to cloud the pricing issues!
In the end it took 7-8 weeks to get my truck -- got it exactly the way I wanted it (on Valentines day 2017 -ordered in late NOV 2016) . I paid exactly 30,500 for the truck -I seem to remember it stickered at a little under 34.000 ( I may be off a little on the sticker plus I am too lazy/busy to dig it out).
So call it a special order or not -- hell-- call it what you want, but you can get what you want if you are willing to be patient and wait it out (most are not). If a dealer truly knows you want to buy and are not just testing the water -- a quality place will work with you. Also remember you probably could not "order" nearing the factory model year change-over date.
    Good luck OP!!

I think the color is the killer. Seen other OR AC trucks around, but never in quicksand. I've only seen that on the double cab. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist though or can't be requested.

You can request anything you want, what they'll give you may be something different.

Just be aware when you sign the purchase agreement with your $1000 deposit you're agreeing to pay MSRP. There was no haggling other than 2k in inventives.

I'm not really thinking I'm going to try to special order. When I decide the time is right I'm going for a DCSB SR5 v6 auto 4x4. I don't really want a lot of options. I'm ok with all weather mats and mud flaps. Might accept nerf bars if i can negotiate a good price. I see a lot of similar trucks when I do searches on auto trader, car gurus and Edmonds. Color is just the only tough thing. I've decided I definitely don't want a black truck and probably not red either, but being all the other possible colors I'm agreeable with I shouldn't have much trouble getting something I'll be happy with within 50 miles. So I won't order, just get something some where off a local lot that fits well with what I want.
