As a youngster, I had the infamous Gumbo Monster Mudder's on a couple of Jeep's, which were like balloons. One of my Jeep's had a custom lift that, with the balloon-like tires, made the thing pretty hairy to drive on the freeway. The short wheelbase and "cushiness" of the tires made for a white knuckle experience.

I'm only a week into my first Toyota/Tacoma, and have been looking at tons of pictures with wheel set-up's. I have to say, I'm really liking the "military" look with the smaller diameter wheel, big sidewall, and narrow tires. I'm sure much of it depends on how you use the truck. My Jeep's were mud/water trucks, so I need the tread and flotation, but the Tacoma will be an urban warrior, so I'm heavily leaning toward the "military" look.

    What say you?

A lot of people here hate on them, but it's hard to beat the aggressive look of the KO2's. I have them on my truck and personally think it gives it a beefy, tough look, without sacrificing much in the way of MPG's and road noise.

Really it's just going to come down to what you like, best bet is to just keep looking at forum builds here and find the exact look you like.

I like the ko2s as well. My truck bought used with 285/75/R16, didn't want to chop, rubbing at flex and reverse, went back to 265/70/R16. Love the tires.

That which most successfuly and efficiently fulfills the mission of the vehicle.
If the OEM stockers do that, then they rock. If you need to go somewhere that they won't take you, then go for broke. I don't get the idea of going big and rasty on a truck that won't leave the pavement. Fuel efficiency, tread life and a comfortable, quiet ride are also admirable. Military pickups are no BS functional vehicles. That's pretty cool. I run fast on a lot of bad dirt and ancient pavement. 15's and 16's are my friend, with plenty of space in the tire for low pressure (30+/-) air to cushion the bumps and sharp rocks. The last thing I would want is lower profile. Too many experiences with busted rims and blown out tires and aching kidneys. KO2's are a pretty good compromise of a strong tire with nice somewhat aggressive looks and still street-able.

Michelin Defenders in a plus size that doesn't require suspension changes.

Top notch urban manners, robust enough for some reasonable trail use.

Been running Michelin Defenders LTX for years on my wife's Mercedes 4wd GLK 250td. Switched from stock 18" rims to Chinese alloy 17's on our first GLK 7 years ago, to provide some air cushion after fretting about cracking a very pricey MB rim, and we've been through 3 sets of the Michelins, pounding 4 times a week over the rough back road without any drama. They get around nicely on the steep slick unpaved driveways and farm roads as well. Sleepers, tough tires that look refined.

I've run the Michelin LTX M/S2 before, and could get 70K+ miles out of them. I'll look into the Defender.

33's for looks, rubs, gutless driving characteristics and poor fuel economy. KO2 33's if you want to roll the mall parking lot!
