Our local Relay for Life was last night. My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 years ago and is a survivor. From that, she got heavily involved with the Relay and is now on the committee. Her idea this year for the luminary bags was to also fill them with canned foods to donate to the local food bank. We also put glow sticks in the bags instead of candles which was much better. Well today when we finished the Relay, I had to droop off the canned food items to the food bank. The total was 850 lbs. in the bed of my truck with probably an additional 100 - 150 lbs. in other stuff in the bed. Then, I had to tow my atv trailer that probably had around 1 ton of sand in it that was donated to us to also put in the luminary bags to help keep them from blowing over due to the lovely wind we usually get here in Sterling.

I've towed a home made utility trailer loaded with wood, tile, drywall, roofing materials and landscaping material dozens of times with the bed packed to the brim. The most I've weighed in is at 3100lbs of garbage plus about 1000lbs of the trailers weight. It's does this quite easily, you can definitely feels the weight but for a v6 1/4 ton truck I think it out performs all of its immediate competition in it's class. I think a lot of us use these trucks harder then most guys with half ton trucks. It's nice to know that a lot of you have successfully towed heavier.

The double cab long box is naturally more likely to sag more then a shorter wheel base.

This load was way over our recommended tow rating. If I had to guess, this was probably around 8000lbs. We only had to go 3 miles down a flat, straight road with very little traffic, but it pulled it fine. Trailer was full of hard wood and marble furniture. One nightstand was about 400 lbs to give you an idea.

Also, the trailer did not like that much weight. It felt like it was going to fall apart. Did great on the slightly lighter loads tho...

hmm...interesting. that's not what the toyota website shows. do a comparison between the different tacoma models.

well ya gotta figure in the extra weight of the double cabs, plus the long bed.

Just looked it up. I see want you're saying. But my owners manual doesn't differentiate between body styles it just says

    Without towing package 3500
    With towing package 6500

The payload changes with the options but not the towing capacity

Payload capacity is how much weight the truck is rated to have in it.
Towing capacity is how much weight
the truck is rated to pull, for example a trailer.

New heaviest for me. It did ok... I have the 4 leaf tsb and a few times I felt it hit the bumpstops. I even had the rhino back a coupe feet on the trailer to give it a little less tongue weight. I did about 300 miles with it, and got consistently 12.85mpg, running at about 65-70. I couldn't imagine pulling anything heavier, as I think it would be an absolute nightmare.

Today at work I towed this trailer around. It has two fairly large water tanks on it (I'm not sure how many gallons), a pump, and some PVC pipes for directing water. Loaded I'm not sure how much it weighs but the Tacoma seem to do fine with it. I wasn't driving around town and stuff though just moving around at the campsite/park I work at. It was my first time towing anything. It made me REALLY like my truck even more though.

First Post - This is the heaviest I have towed, Shamrock 23RS Travel trailer. Somewhere around 4500 pounds. 08 Prerunner SR5 without the tow package. I have added a Reese Class III/IV hitch, oil cooler, transmission cooler, brake controller, all of the necessary wiring, Timbren Tortun 4, and a set of the CIPA universal fit towing mirrors. Only thing I missing from the factory tow package is the 130 amp alternator. I can definitively tell its back there. Always have the transmission in 4th and can cruise at 60 with no problem. Gas mileage goes somewhere in the 10 mpg range. Looking to install a transmission temp gauge but waiting on the gauge pod from Lotek, also need to fix the squeaking leaf springs.

I have a 2011 4.0 v6 prerunner SR5 2wd. I pull a 6x12 cargo trailer that weighs 1400lbs, and around 2200lbs when I have gear in it. It pulls like a champ. Accelerates easily. I can feel it uphill, but I drop it in to 4 and it pulls easily. Gas mileage is not that great when towing, but can't complain. And I have not done the TSB on the rear leaf spring. I actually called the dealership today. They said that they will have to inspect it before doing the tsb. I dont have a harsh ride, and to be honest, I didnt think it was even sagging that much with the trailer. I only have 3 leafs. He said that adding the TSB might cause it to ride too rough. I just want whats best for the truck. But as far as pulling the trailer, piece of cake!

I don't have the towing package; Just an after-market hitch bolted to the frame.
I want to tow a 1500 Lb. "A Liner" Pop-up" 8000 miles round-trip from Philly to Yosemite over mountains, through desert, etc.
The pop-up has it's own brakes, so I plan on adding a brake controller and wiring harness.
I'm not sure if this is safe or advisable.
Does anyone have any advice, suggestions, or comments.
    Thanks,
    Will

I am guessing this is a 23ft trailer? Is 4500 the dry weight? Do you have WDH and sway?
