I'm tired after a 12 hour shift, can't imagine being up for days at a time. But check out the record:

"The record for the longest period without sleep is 18 days, 21 hours, 40 minutes during a rocking chair marathon. The record holder reported hallucinations, paranoia, blurred vision, slurred speech and memory and concentration lapses."

About 2 years back did it up in Vegas one weekend. I am unsure of the exact time I was up but it had to have been anywhere from 25 - 30 hours. Slept for a few hours, then did it all again the following day, fun weekend .

I used to be an X-Ray tech. and I remember working in the operating rooms and seeing the new young residents standing there holding a retractor for the surgeon and sometimes they would just nod off. I'm surprised I never actually saw one fall face first into a pile of guts. It gets really warm in the OR sometimes and you're breathing through a mask and you're all wrapped up nice and warm, not much excitement................perfect way to get sleepy.

Never fallen asleep while standing up, driving, flying on a plane or anything like that........I need to be in a bed. I guess after a point I would fall asleep no matter what but I've never been THAT sleepy. I feel for those guys on those military shows when they ARE that tired and aren't allowed to fall asleep and they are expected to be on top of their game.

i once worked a 21.5 hour shift in the ER, i was supposed to do 12 hours, 11am-11pm, i got held because of a "lockdown" to 16 total (ok ill leave at 3am, i do this a lot), then just as i was leaving another nurse didnt show up and a bad trauma came in, so i said i'd stay (now leave at 7am) then i got hit with a big F-you, day light savings time, got out the door at 830 am. home at 9, asleep by 10, 25 hours after i woke up the day before. that sucked, and i got in trouble from the labor union, haha

    36+ hours?

I'm usually awake for 24-30 hours at least once a month (every 4 weeks) for work, been doing that for 22 years.

It is kinda funny/sad; but I used to drive from San Clemente, CA to south of Ft Worth, Tx straight through to spend a day or so at home. Then with maybe an hour or two of sleep I'd turn around and go back so as to report for roll call in the morning. On those weekends I would be up at 5am in Cali and wouldn't get any sleep till after working hours on Monday.

As for my longest stretch; I really can't remember exactly, but my whole deployment to Iraq seemed like an exercise in sleep deprivation with the rotation we were on. The first couple of months we spend any time not in our gear filling sand bags or stacking sand bags. It was sad to want to be in gear so as you didn't have to fill the damn sand bags.

My boss was telling me a story yesterday about Vietnam and he was assigned to bridge a river ASAP, they had some other combat engineers scout it and they said it would take them 3 weeks to build the bridge but he said he could do it in three days if he was supplied correctly. 2 1/2 days later he was ready for the first vehicles to cross and a huey came and landed in the middle of his bridge and he ran over and told them to get the hell out of there, he was about to open this bridge up, the first convoy was waiting to cross. a 3 star general stepped out and pinned a medal on him for getting that bridge up. He said he his unit was attacked 9 times by small arms, rpgs, and mortars and they'd stop, fight them off, and get back to work. This was during the Tet offensive and the Vietcong had blow up all the bridges across this particular river and had cut off the 101st airborne. Anyway the point of the story is he was awake for 60 hours straight under crazy stressful conditions, he wins in my book.

About 41 years. I have bad insomnia. I never really sleep - I go to bed at midnight and roll around till 5:00 when it is time to get up. I do fall asleep, but only for 10 minutes or so at a time.
I can easily work a full day, get in the car and drive through the night from Florida to Maryland to visit my sister there, get there in the morning and go through the whole day before going to bed the next night.
It's a terrible curse, but I never use medication, so I don't want to use any ambien or something like that. I guess my body is just used to it and when I lay down at night with my eyes closed I get the rest that I need, because I am not overly tired during the day and live a fairly active lifestyle.
