What's the more offroad capable: FJ or Taco?

    The FJ is a great and tight vehicle...visibility to the rear sucks..and it really is cramped. Especially when it comes to trips. I took my 2007FJ to Escalante, Utah last summer with 3 kids and and a dog...We started off in Yuba City, Cali. We ended up having to use a carrier in the hitch and piled a ton of stuff on the roof. The rack for the FJ isn't designed very well. It need more reinforcement to the front. Its definitely a two person excursion vehicle and it proved that in the desert. The 2008 Tacoma is roomier, but for some reason has a rubbery ride to it. It does handle great though. I just drove back to Salt Lake from here again. We hit the great blizzard of 2007 12/28 to 12/29 over Donner summit at 0200 hrs and it followed us all the way to Wendover. The Tacoma is great in the snow. This time I had 4 passengers and no dog. Much more room, but definitely a 4 person vehicle! I do like the Tacoma better then the FJ, only because of the roominess. My comparison would be the FJ is more capable as a "Crawler" rocks and boulders, where the Tacoma is pretty much field and stream.

    I love my truck but if i were going to do more offroading i would have gone with the FJ. I love them, especially the limited editions. I think the FJ will be more capable, but the Taco will handle just about anything you throw at it. So unless you are going to be doing something very extreme i think both vehicles will do what you need. it just boils down to personal preference. I will say this, there are still days i think about the FJ i was looking at and lust after what could have been....

    To answer your question, an FJ is probably more capable. But I think your real deciding factor should be- What are you planning on hauling? If you don't need a truck, and you were going for the access cab, then I would rec the FJ.

    i went through the same delema when i was buying my vehicle, couldn't decide between the two. i went with the double cab tacoma. i was surprised that the double cab actually had more room in the backseat than the fj. the tacoma will also carry more stuff.
    on the other hand, as stock vehicles, the fj was designed almost purely for off roading. after modifications, they will be nearer to each other in that category, but i don't know if you were planning on any addons.

    so basically....
    tacoma=more people space(double cab), more cargo space (all modles)
    FJ=more capable off road

    I wouldn't call the FJ very capable off road!

    When I had my 07 Jk Wrangler I went wheeling about 2 times a month with close friends, 2 jeeps and 2 FJ's, and 1 05 DC Tacoma OR. The Jeeps would do awesome in the rock crawling section, but was at the end of the pack when it came to Mudding, Sand, Steep hill climbing, and Snow Wheeling. The FJ's were very tippy. lacked in the rock crawling section and always seemed to be slowing us down. I dont know what it was, just failed in lots of situations. Surprisingly,my buddies Tacoma, did extreamly well in all catagories. The longer wheelbase crushed the jeeps and fjs in snow and mudd. And with the Tacoma being the only STOCK one there, it out performed us in lots of ways. Even in the rock crawling section it hung with our Jeeps. It just took a little more time and careful driving for him.

    This is the whole reason I traded in the jeep and got my tacoma! It can take anything I throw at it and still have the truck bed and 4 doors.

    The Jeeps were underpowered.
    And the FJ,s arent worth the $ for as capable as they are off road.

    just my 2 cents

    completely stock
    buy a 4x4 reg cab(the same wheelbase as the fj), add lift, lockers, 4.88 gears, 33"-35" tires, Marlin Crawler, and Armor and still not have as much invested as a stock FJ...

    Just the basics
    A stock FJ vs a stock TRD OR Taco is very close. All the off road drive capabilities are the same. The thing the FJ has going for it is the approach/departure angles and the shorter wheelbase.

    Hated the FJC, as it really didn't suit any purposes for me, plus had a TON of cheap plastic.
