I just had the shocks and struts on my 2010 Tacoma replaced, because the shop said some of them were "leaking". They showed me the parts and the leaks. I understand they need to be done in pairs, so I had them do the work. Here's the rub: I only have 20,800 miles on the truck. I purchased it new 9 years ago. Has anyone had this happen to them? Maybe because of age and not miles? The seals dried up? Thanks for any info.

I had a 1998 tacoma for 17 yrs. and I only replaced the rear shocks once. Like you I didn’t drive it very much, due too I had a work vehicle. The struts were never changed.

Generally speaking, shocks and struts wear based on miles, not years. That said, factory shocks are generally pretty good for 30-40,000 miles. Front struts can last 80-90,000 miles. (This assumes you're not pounding down rough dirt roads all the time too.)

Even though you have an 8 year old truck, I struggle with the front struts being shot that soon. The rear shocks, maybe, but I still doubt it. Then again, a seal may have dried out or gotten ripped. I'd love to see the takeout parts.
