One of the reasons I bought the 5 lug 4 cylinder was the ride. Much, much better than the Prerunner or 4x4 or V6 DC with the 6 lug suspension. I spend the majority of my driving on the interstate so that was a major factor.

Getting 20 mpg around town doesn't hurt, either.

Inexpensive and reliable. I paid right at $13K for my 5-lugger reg cab 5-speed after a nice rebate last February - and I've seen 26 MPG highway out of it a few times. I routinely get about 25 in mixed (mostly highway) driving. If I had it to do again, I might go for the access cab instead of the regular cab to get the extra room and the bucket seats - but at the time I just didn't want to spend an extra $3000 for it. I still think it's ridiculous that it's that much more. As for the 2.7L 4-banger itself... it's a great little engine. It won't win many drag races, but it's fast enough - and more importantly has plenty of torque. It's perfect for hauling my motorcycles and has no trouble towing my 17' bow-rider boat (about 2500 lbs). I'm sure that with the lower gearing of the 4x4, it pulls even better (but gets worse MPG). If you look up "reliable" in the dictionary, you'll see a picture of a Toyota 4-banger.

the 2tr-fe is supposed to be an international comercial duty engine. its made to be used and abused, so with a little care it should last. should being the operative word. no complaints on mine, only eight months old. good umph for a four cyl, alot more pickup than my wifes 6 cyl ford edge.

Basicly it should cost less to own over the years , less purchase price , bit better mpg, less maintainace, loweer payments. If you need a vehicle and are prctical in its use , the 4 cyl might b 4u.
if you wont tolerate medium acclereration, you want it competitive , get the v6. oh yea , not sure of the difference , but im sure insurance is less

have 145k miles on mine and it still runs like it is new, my grandpa has 280k miles on his 4 cyl and he puts on 20k miles a year on it mostly off roading since its a registered farm truck, looks like hell on the outside but you would never know it has that many miles from driving it or that its been beat on so much haha

LOL, I've pulled plenty of people out with mine. In fact there just might be some pics of me doing so here on the forum.

    I love my 2.7L

I bought it because I wanted a 4x4 truck that had good fuel efficiency and still had a decent amount of power. Something that could handle off road terrain, and could be driven cross country to find it. So far it hasn't let me down and as far as power goes, there's plenty of it. The 2.7L Pre Runner and 4x4s actually have a higher payload rating than any of the 4.0L Tacomas.

It was also nice to get off the lot for $10,000 less than I would have been able to with an access or quad cab.

I like the fact that my truck can damn near turn its wheels perpendicular. No problem in tight space.

I just love my 4 banger! I get 25 mpg average I have it lifted 3" with the 5100 Biltstein shocks. It runs amazingly well and is not that expensive to maintain.

The 2.7L Is a great little truck motor! I have no complaints with mine. Has enough power for what I need, good fuel economy, cheap to maintain, (no timing belt!, Iridium Spark Plugs) And less expensive than the V6! The V6 does have noticably more power, but if you dont need, why get it?

Hey nice bike!! i use my taco for moving my bike as well, I have an SV650 too. My truck suspension levels out with the bike in the back, but it hauls no problem at all.

    i loove my 4 banger
and as for the lack of power issue, just wait till urd is done with the 2.7L turbo kit for the gen II trucks :D
my shitty mpg is mostly due to my bigger, heavier tires (32"), heavy foot and winter blend gas :(

I don't know much about the 2.7, BUt I can tell it's quicker than my old powerstroke I traded it for. Also I went down a muddy road this morning, I made it in 2wd. My old truck I had I had to lock it into 4x4. So I liked that.
