What's the skinny on aftermarket inverters?

As I've been digging around looking for info on how to add my own inverter and run power to the bed or wherever, I found several people expressing reservations about inverters. Others like them but are opinionated about how and where they should be installed. I also read cautions against getting modified sine wave inverters and instead getting pure sine wave.

So what's the deal with inverters? Do you like them or not? The pros are obvious but what are the cons? And as far as aftermarket inverters go, what are the truly reputable brands that I should consider (assuming after reading all of the cons I still want to)?

I'd go with a Pure sine wave. There are too many Chinese brands, some good, most junk.

I found a really good brand out of Taiwan. They have a good price/performance ratio. I've used them for about 7 years, with no issues.
