What's this sound?

Uniball is lubed. New steering rack and ball joints last week. What the hell is this?

Wtf??? I've never heard anything like that. Does the same noise while it's moving as well?

 

Maybe a bushing not tightened up all the way? Someone there to help you pinpoint where exactly it's coming from(while you turn wheel, they lay down and listen, vice versa)?

 

The noise is from before or after instalation of ball joint and rack?

 

So loud it's hard to pinpoint. Turning heads as I'm driving down the street. Progressively got worse and worse. Just had it towed home. Also, I can't turn all the way to the right. Only can turn the wheel like one full turn.

 

Faulty ball joint or steering rack..? Get it up in the air and start checking things out.

Actually it shouldnt be to hard to pinpoint on the ground. Get a buddy to get down under and listen around while you turn the wheel.

 

Tie rods??

 

How long ago did you lube the uniballs, and what fluid did you use? My UCA uniballs actually make a similar sound when they haven't been lubed for a while.

 

Teflon silicone, they've only been on the truck a week. Lubed them probably 3 times since they've been on because the noise has been getting worse.

 

There's your problem.

 

Lift the front end. Get some tension off. Might be able to hear it better.

 

Tie rods are new as well, unless one is faulty. The steering rack bushings have a crazy amount of play as well, but the sound really doesn't sound like it's coming from any bushings.

 

Will do. Had to tow it home about 60 miles. Gotta get ready for my shift so won't be able to work on it till sat.

 

If the rack has play id say thats your issue.

I'm guessing ball joint. Disconnect the outer tie rod from the knuckle on that side and jack the truck up. Push and pull the wheel back and forth and see if you hear it. Sounds like a DRY ball joint to me.

 

Would of of those automotive stethoscope things help? I know it's loud as shit but might pinpoint it...never used one

 

Yep, sounds exactly like a dry aftermarket lower ball joint, a new OEM would not to that.

 

Unbolted the outer tie rod and moved the wheel by hand. Sounded like lbj. Removed the lbj and spun the rotor/spindle and it still makes the screech and it's hard to turn. The driver side that's connected to the tie rod makes the sound as well.

So that leaves me with the uniball as the last piece. Why are they making the noise and not spinning easily? The (shitty) shop did the install of the uca's, could they have somehow assembled them wrong? Seems pretty straight forward to put them together. If I take the uniball apart what should I be looking for?
