Been staying on top of the 3rd gen MPG because I thought it would be a decent increase with the newer technology being incorporated.
I'm fairly surprised to see people getting 11-13 MPG with lift, tires, armor and a roof rack.

My mom bought a 2015 expedition with the 3.5L Ecoboost (twin turbo) the other day and we've driven it quite a bit.
We've average 22-23 MPG highway and 17-18 city, which doesn't sound all that impressive compared to the tacoma until you stop and think about the specs of each vehicle.

    Tacoma:
    Weight, ~4,400 lbs
Power, 278 Horsepower and 265 Ft-lb of torque

    Expedition:
    Weight, ~6,100 lbs
Power, 365 horsepower and 420 Ft-lb of torque

So overall the same engine displacement, same number of speeds in the trans, smaller size and lighter one would think that the tacoma would get better fuel mileage with "Normal" driving.

Yes, the new skewp will be bigger, very similar to the skewps on the tundra.

Hey, nobody ever said toyota used cutting edge technology. Those modern ecoboost motors really are something, but I doubt you'll be seeing many of them joining the 400k+ mile club.

True, I wouldn't expect 400K from a twin turbo engine, I honestly would be happy with the power and efficiency and a rebuild every 200K-250K.

I think it's cute how people automatically think MPG is still a direct result of weight and displacement in 2016....

If that were the case the SR guys would be bragging up their 30+ MPG Tacomas. No, you pay a premium for MPG in trucks in in 2016. It is a technology that requires R&D. You want great MPG per curb weight? Expect to pay a premium. More profitable full-size trucks always get the best MPG tech in today's automotive climate. It then trickles down to other segments years layer.

Ever wonder why a Prius get's gobs better MPG then a Yaris? It's not the size, the Prius is still relatively heavy for it's class, it's the price. You pay a premium for good MPG. Same goes for the F-150. You pay extra for the EcoBoost. The shitty part is that for those of us who like a smaller truck, we're jipped. An aluminum turbo Tacoma would get killer MPG but it's just not in the cards for us because our market isn't the most profitable.

People don't drive Tacomas because they are broke and can't afford a full size, we drive them for the size, and we get screwed on MPG.
Auto companies structure price/mpg/size very cleverly. No shit full size trucks get better MPG per curb weight.

Where Tacoma competes is resale. And resale is often a direct result of reliability, which is often a result simplicity and in today's market the Tacoma is still a relatively simple truck, so they last longer with less issues... That is another post in itself though...
