I should note that while video shows me using a pvc contraption, that was the only time I actually used it. After recording and live testing I realized it was not going to work with me fiddling with all that so that is when I attached a hitch mount to side of the truck. Actual loading and unloading of this kayak took maybe 30 seconds max and that is with me usually talking to crowd of people asking me how I did the setup.

This is link to hitch receiver I mounted to frame of truck and used it all the time like that.

Side by side tandem setup for my kid and I. He'll be too big for his boat next year, so I'm getting ready to start a couple of lake boats for us to use next year, probably will run with a tow line for a while to start but by this time next year I hope to have him fully cut loose.

nothing fancy, oem roof rack with yakima jaylow mounts. The dagger katana is just a tad over 50lbs so not bad mounting and unmounting by yourself, but easier with two people. I run a bow and stern line when traveling any distance.

Same basic shit everybody else had 5 years ago.
I thought about going that route and still might but being a foot longer with the Slayer 13.....I just couldn't take a chance on someone rear ending me and sending a few grand in kayak down the drain.

Nice set up by the way.

I know. Still nervous about hauling my boats like this. Last truck had a top with a roof rack. Didn't have to worry about it but it was hard on my shoulders loading them. Thinking about the bed rack from Mobtown to get them up higher.

I haven't taken the kayak out in my second gen yet (which is unacceptable but I didn't fish hardly at all this summer). In the old first gen I had, I put my 12 foot Field and Stream Eagle Talon on the bed and used 3/4 inch rope and tied it in a loop.

I would push the yak all the way to the front of the bed against the cab. Put the loop around the end of the yak sticking off the end of the tailgate (tailgate is down, FYI).

I would use ratchet straps from the d rings on each side of the bed and attach them to the rope that is on the end of the yak. Then I would put a ratchet through the carry handle at the front of the bed and attach the ends of the ratchet to the front d rings, just to give it some added security.

Keep in mind, I don't take my kayak very far when I fish. I am trying to find a blog post with pictures explaining better what I'm talking about.

I put two cleats on my front rail I added into my 3rd gen, those attach through the front handle rope, then a ratchet strap over the kayak just before the tailgate, where the d rings are, then one strap securing it to the bed extender.

I think I know what you are taking about. My only concern is when you go too fast on the highway and if your strap break then you will have your kayak flying down the highway. That's my worst nightmare.

Mine, too. But a strap breaking while going down the highway would be terrible no matter how you load it. I've also used the roof rack on the ARE shell we had (haven't used the ATC shell we have on our second gen). The bed method is easier to load and unload by yourself, though.

Yes.....a few screws and a couple of 2x4s. I added the third boat and had to get them off the floor.

I wish I had a few good 12-13ft yaks but all I have is a few el-cheap-o's. They're nothing special but are just barely stable enough for me to stand and fly fish from.
