Thailand was fun, but the most memorable events took place east of there.

Pretty lame, as I served in a very rare period of pure peacetime, so never left CONUS, there were no such things as "deployments" when I was in (1985-88). In Army Basic, I graduated with a plaque and special recognition for having scored the highest in my training company during rifle qualification (36 out of 38). And, I was Distinguished Honor Graduate (top of my class) from Army AIT (Advanced Individual Training) [MOS=27E, T.O.W./Dragon missile systems repair].

Me too...Pattaya....favorite place in the world. Add pool balls in order...and then dispensed in the same order just in reverse! Writing my name with a pen, massages (legit of course), klosters beer, whiskey and water, in the clubs till 5 am when the cops show up to kick us out....yeah...that's one of the memories.

So I'm trying to hid a king size snickers bar (that I got from a care box that one of the guys got) from the DI and of course my rack gets tossed and then flashbacks of leanord eating a donut while everyone else is doing pushups (full metal jacket)....eventually there was a DI on all sides screaming at me while the Senior steps on the snickers (snickers gets spewed out on side of shoe and package) and tells me to eat it.....yup....wrapper and all in about 3 seconds! lol. Then came water torture by making me drink 3+ canteens of water...I say + because as I'm chugging and then I puke straight down and all I see are shiny Senior DI shoes as it's shooting out of my mouth....then it goes dark....lol. Think I got hit or something....I dunno...but memorable and 100+ truth. So many more moments.....Parris Island and then the rest of my 20 years! lol

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
Flying as a AMT (maint. tech.) on a Northern Gulf of Tonkin RC-135 mission back in 70 or 71 and hearing the "backenders" (all of my fellow USAF Security Service operators) getting excited in hearing a 2 NVA Air force MIG's had just been tricked into coming up against of us when we had just gone back to a fall orbit back (place of safety). We had left 2 Navy fighter jets in our place and the MIG's and found the Navy F4's in our place where we had just been. The MIG's quickly realized they had been tricked. They dropped down to the cover of the low ceiling. One of them got back to his base the other ran out of fuel and the pilot had to eject. This was when a big cheer erupted from the back of our plane. Did we get credit for a MIG kill -- most definitely not! - WE were never "where we were" WE were the "silent warriors". I have 30+ combat missions over the Northern Gulf of Tonkin and/or over Northern Laos - are any of these missions credited on my DD-214 -- NO way. I was only a "single termer" AF vet, but I know in my heart our missions (we had 2 - 20 hour missions each and every day from 1969-74 -with only 6 aircraft -all of these planes are still flying BTW) - our missions contributed a lot to the Viet Nam effort.
Our program was called "Combat Apple" Look it up if you please. Thanks for reading this!

Was just browsing the military forum and stumbled upon this thread...

For me, without a doubt would have to be my front row seat to the fall of the Berlin Wall. My buddy and I got a pass for the long weekend, some updated flag orders, and had decided to head up to Berlin from Darmstadt to partake of some value-oriented eating, drinking, and shopping in East Berlin. Crossed intra-German border at Checkpoint Alpha at 2300 hrs on 8 Nov 89, and arrived at Checkpoint Bravo in West Berlin around 0100 hrs on 9 Nov 89 - just one hour after the party had gotten started. Suddenly the 8 hours of driving and the wee hour didn't matter, we headed straight to Brandenburg Gate and joined in. Later on, after a few hours sleep, we put our Class Bs on, got a quickie security briefing at Checkpoint Charlie and then spent the day walking around East Berlin, being greeted everywhere by smiling East Berliners - while still being sure to enjoy 10 cent drafts of course (paid for in East German marks purchased at the real exchange rate at a bank in West Berlin). Finally headed back and got thru Checkpoint Charlie around 1900 hrs. Still in uniform, we were able to hang out in security area directly adjacent to guard shack... which is where we still were when Helmut Kohl showed up. After he strolled thru the guard shack, he came out by the side door, saw us standing there, walked up to us, said "Guten Aubend" to us while shaking our hands, and then disappeared back into the crowd.

Ill drop this little gem, as it still kinda haunts me.

Was on a WestPac tour in 2000. We pull into port, I think it was Jebel Ali? UAE. Just released the crew for libery, I was OOD that day.
Hell, probably not more than 2 hours later we get a call to the shack and its base command. We need to recall the crew immediately and get back underway, as they got an intel report that there was an imminent attack on our ship with a cargo truck loaded with explosives to crash the main gates, hit the boat and detonate. Sound familiar?
USS Cole about 5 months later. Same class of Arleigh Burke Destroyer as us. Different port.

So we get everyone back on board... Actually, I think one guy didnt make it in time. Anyway, we head back out continue our ops.
Later that night out of frickn nowhere VADM of the 5th fleet gets flown on board.
We pass back out the Straits of Hormuz towards the gulf of Oman near Paki/Afghani.
Down in CIC you can hear comms about his location and to stand by for further strike orders. The GMMs are on full alert.
We circle for about 48-60 hours or so off the coast.

Our orders for strike are declined.
We were hunting for OBL. We knew his exact location. He was hiding in the bunker in the basement of a childrens hospital.

We missed one of our many opportunities.

    Hindsight.

because of my concussion I was partially blind, lost some of my hearing and it put me out of service. All is well tho, that was 10 years ago. I’m still partially blind and I regained my hearing, but I have permanent ringing in the ears, finished my schooling elsewhere after discharge and I am a nurse today

My entire time in was a shitshow. My most memorable moment of service was the day I broke my back.

The lifelong friends I made and the metric buttload of good/not so good memories. Many lessons that followed me through today.

I can’t say I would change one thing if I could.
