So you are saying that 4wd trucks should get the same gas mileage as 2wd's? You mean I can keep it in 2wd and get the gas mileage of a 2wd truck? If only that were true.

I get about 310 to a tank, combined.
Mostly "short hop highway miles" versus stop and go in town stuff.

This works out to about 18-ish.

Ive got a 2.5" lift with 265/75/16 cooper STMaxx tires, still averaging right at 20mpg, although this is mostly highway. I drive like an old man around town, and i keep my max speed on the highway to 60mph.

I hope everyone can provide real MPG figures and not 'ultragauge' estimates. Here's how:

Start by filling the tank and zero your trip odometer.
    Now drive.
When you have used most of the tank, fill it again and record the gallons to fill it.
Divide the miles on the trip odometer by the gallons to fill.
THAT is the MPG for that tank of gas.

V-6 4WDs (driven in 2WD) will have lower MPG numbers because of added weight and friction over 2WD trucks.

Stop and Go driving (towns/ city) really reduce the mileage. 14-16 mpg typical.
Highway long distance and not over 75 mph should be closer to 19-21 mpg.
Heavy loads, and RPMs over 2000 (70 mph) will drop the figures.

All true. The reality is that I only care from the practical standpoint of how much further can I go before I need to find gas. Ultragauge provides a nice estimate and that's good for me.

If you just zero the trip odometer when you top off the tank, you can use it to estimate tank level if your Toyota gas gauge is broken. You need to know the mpg for that kind of driving, of course.

If your fuel gauge does work, here are the gallons at the various marks (+/- 0.5 gal.):

From a full tank to the 3/4 tank line is 5 gallons used (16 in the tank).
From full tank to the 1/2 tank line is 9 gallons used (12 in the tank).
From full tank to the 1/4 tank line is 13 gallons used (8 in the tank).
From full tank to the LOW light is 17 gallons used (4 in the tank).
From full tank to the E line is 18 gallons used (3 in the tank).
When you stop moving is 21 gallons used (0 in the tank)... LOL!

I've saved your 4wd driving modes summary from previous notes? Are you an engineer? I ask because I am and you love details.

Ha! I should have been... Wanted to be a cartographer... life got in the way for staying in college... Got into the irrigation business (sprinklers and drip systems for landscape)... wrote guides and a book on them. Before then, I drew maps of places we went to in Baja... wrote two travel guide books while in high school... Now, almost 40 years later, I have co-authored a book on the missions built between 1697 and 1834... No cure for me, it seems! LOL:eek:

To Edit my earlier post from early in the summer when I was getting 18.5 MPG

I've since got another FWD car daily driver for my commute that gets 30 mpg and I use my Tacoma less for a long highway commute and more for fishing, camping, getting stuff from the junkyard, lumberyard, ect. I have averaged 15.5 MPG through 3 tanks.

Still happy, my other truck (7.3 f350) gets 11 mpg while every one else who owns the same truck claims high teens.

Look at my Fuelly Avg.... I'm all stock broham. I'm really second guessing the lift/tires I'm going to put on it. But most of my traveling is city so maybe that's why?

I have an '06 TRD Off Road 4x4 double cab automatic with standard size all-terrain tires. A few years ago, I drove a couple hundred miles on a little-used highway (otherwise people would have been really pissed at me) at 55 mph and got 25 mpg. This was using non-ethanol gas and no AC. At 65 with E10 in the tank the truck gets right at 20 mpg. On the interstate at 75 with the AC on I get around 18 mpg. In town and hauling trailers I get about 16 mpg. According to Fuely, it looks like 19 mpg is about the average.

Remember that this was with non-ethanol gas, which will add about 4% to your mileage. Such gas is hard to come by around here now, most is E10. Also it was on a drive up a highway from south to north, which here is flat (the terrain going up to the Rockies rises from east to west). Finally, it was at 55 mph.

However, in a pinch it's good to know that I can extend a tank by a few miles if I really have to. I once drove out of Salt Lake City heading west with a quarter tank in my '87. Not having traveled the road before, I didn't know that the next station was over 100 miles away. I had been on "E" for some time and was creeping along at 50 (and really pissing people off) when I finally pulled into that truck stop just south of the Bonneville Salt Flats.

My 2014 DC LB (4WD) TRD Sport with Supercharger has been averaging 16-17 mpg for combined city and highway, according to Scangauge. Bear in mind that this includes towing 1 ton trailer on occasion.

On the highway, I have been able to get 20 mpg (loaded with passengers).
