Maybe I am old fashion, or just old... but dividing miles traveled by the pumped gallons to refill is fact... a 'scangauge' is just a toy guessing at what your truck is burning.

I have to really really try hard to ever get 20 mpg, with an empty truck, level roads. Unless you have ethanol free (real) gasoline and driving downhill all the time, or at 50 mph, I don't see how anyone gets 20 mpg, loaded, in a 4 door, automatic, V-6, 4WD Tacoma? Great if you do however!!!

I get 19ish, tons of tanks over 20 and lots of tanks in the 18's. 80k miles tracked on Fuelly.

Just filled up after 2nd tank w scangauge. 18.4 mpg mainly city, little highway. was 15.5-16.5 before scangauge. Calculated by resetting trip odom at refill and using gallons to full. Scangauge rocks.

OK, help out this old guy please... How does adding a scangauge give you better mileage, real mileage increase? Does it do something to the engine? If it really can increase 3 mpgs then why wouldn't all car makers add it to increase the numbers?

    Thank you!

It can be configured with different readouts such as throttle opening, intake vacuum, realtime MPG (calculated). If you look at the gauge once in a while it can help you adjust the way you drive in such a way as to use less fuel.

So it does nothing to the engine to increase mileage, but instead let's you see things that can improve mileage as you drive?

Thank you... So after installing the scangauge you still must change the way you drive to get more MPGs.

Exactly. It gives you realtime and avg mpg. Having the numbers staring me in the face helps me go easier on the gas pedal.

It's a scanGAUGE*. It reads inputs, performs calculations, and displays the results. It doesn't reprogram the ECU or shut down one bank of cylinders.
You are most welcome. Before or after installing a scangauge, you can also do other things to your vehicle to improve mileage, things which require no change at all in the way you drive.

If you're seriously interested and not just trolling, I recommend the checking out the ecomodder board. Lots of people there with ideas and experience.

*A scangauge also lets you view and clear OBDII codes, so technically it is a wee bit more than just a gauge.

Just ran through my first tank in my '06 AC 4x4 automatic with canopy, 17.9 mpg of mixed driving. More city than highway, a couple of 500-600 lb loads to the dump and one camping trip loaded up with some gear and maybe 20 miles off pavement but nothing crazy.

Yes and no. I commute into Seattle every day, one way is 35 miles of mostly highway but that's in Seattle traffic. Nearly half of those miles are stop and go everyday. I've been on plenty of camping trips with 4 people, 2 adults 2 kids, in the truck and loaded with gear and I still get low to mid 18's including going over our mountain passes.

^^^ THIS. I would like to get a scanguage and see if it helps. I'm just afraid I'd be spending all my time in the truck staring at the scanguage screen. But anything is better than the mileage I get. I'm bone stock TRD OffRoad, and you can see what I average below. And I have to baby the hell out of it to get that . You guys with higher averages gotta be doin a considerable amount of highway, or have holes cut in your floorboards doin the Fred Flinstone!

That's what my '02 Chevy Z71 extended cab got. It was 4x4, with front and rear heavy duty bumpers.

So far about 14.7 city and 17.7 highway. 14 Double cab manual off road. Best ever was 20 on a 60 mph speed limit highway route.
