Alright so I'm on the search for a taco. I assumed a 2nd gen was out the question because of the price, but I came across an '05 dc trd taco for $13,999....because it has 183,000 miles. Would this be a horrible idea of a buy? It's either a 2nd gen like this or a 1st gen for around the same price with around 100,000-150,000 miles. The truck looks brand new still fyi...what would you do?

So you'd suggest a first gen over this? Damn I want a 2nd gen but I know I'd struggle with payments.

Is it a private owner or a dealer? If possible I'd inquire as to how that many miles were obtained in just 5 years. I bought a 2005 in feb of 2009 and it only had 43,190 on it. So if possible I'd see if I could find out what kind of driving was done on it, if they had a kid who might be curious about the concept of a "neutral drop", and if they would be willing to go down to the 10 grand mark...

    ps, what color?

I just wouldn't get a vehicle that has so many miles on it, unless it is going to a project truck. i know it a toyota but still.

For me I've always considered the price into the expected mileage I want for the vehicle. For every 1,000 I spent, I want 10,000 miles back. On my Tacoma, I spent 18,000, so I figure I'll get 180,000 miles out of it. With only 43 thousand on it, that's reasonable. If your truck already has 183,000 on it, do you think if you spend 14 large on it, you'll get another 140,000 out of it?

Mostly stock for now, I have added a cb radio, various cheap mods and I plan on adding aftermarket wheels and other items in the future.
I wouldn't buy anything with that many miles, unless it was a lot lower in price. If you do decide to buy it, make sure you take it in to get looked over, and a compression test. Also some sort of extended warranty might be a good idea.

If you really like it, try to get it down in price. If they don't budge, walk away. There are a lot of these trucks, nothing wrong with waiting-the right one will come along.

    Hope that helps.

I think if that truck was properly maintained, and obviously it was driven on the highway, I would say yea its possible. My neighbors Silverado has 422,000 miles on it. He never touched any of the differentials or anything.

OP....Put an offer of 10500 on the truck, keep in mind you may need to a engine sawp a 100k down the road. Also KBB shoots the trade value at 8350....so I would not go higher than 10500. See what the car fax reads for maint.

Too many miles. If I knew the owner and how well he took care of it I might do it but not knowing if it was driven hard I'd pass.

I think it'd be nearly impossible to drive that many miles and have the truck be abused. I have 40k on my '09 already, so I'll be where he is in about 3 more years. I know that all I do is get on the highway, stick it at 72, and cruise. Pretty much the easiest miles a vehicle could have. If the truck checks out good, I personally wouldn't be afraid of it. I'm banking on getting 300k out of mine.

I personally think you should look around more to find a better idea, I got my Taco for $15,000.00 with a trade in on my 99 Tahoe that only got me $2500 on trade in. It had only 48,xxx miles on it when I got it, not to mention it came with a camper shell, bed rug, and side steps. Keep looking out there you will come across a sweeter deal, thats what I did and I am glad I didnt go for the first one I seen.

Its not a horrible buy but the price it too high. Basic Kelley Blue Book value is about $12.5K for that truck, at least what I know about it. That should be your starting point. Never ever pay more than that.

I agree with the others. Be patient and get a better deal. $10K is a different story though. I just may do it for that.

I can't see spending more than $10k on a truck with over 125k miles regardless of it's history. Too much money for too many miles.
