I was raised Jewish. Now the only time I am in temple or church is for weddings, confirmations, bar/bat mitzvahs and death. My current religion is indulged on mountain summits, by the wildest shores, and in the deepest woods. It also includes a healthy measure of kindness to my fellow humans.

All hail the Great God Tacoma, King of the Adventurer's Universe

My great-grandfather was raised in the Zuni Mountains of New Mexico by two devout Catholics. When he was in his twenties, his mother took ill with a condition that was too advanced for the local doctors. He traveled to Albuquerque wth his mother to a Catholic hospital, seeking help. When they arrived, he was told that the hospital would not administer any care until all payments were made in advance...

Ever since that unfortunate incident, Catholicism has disappeared from my family altogether, except for the basic belief that there must be a God, and He wants us to be kind to our fellow man. As long as men are at peace, I really believe it doesn't matter if you go to church at all.

I was raised a southern baptist but I was never much of a religious person. I think the last time I went to church for a service and not a ceremony or somethin was almost 10 years ago.

Similar in that my mother had a bad experience when she was pregnant with me--our family fell away from Lutheranism that way.

When I lived at the house I gave to my ex a few years ago and a couple miles from here our neighbor out back was a preacher at a Christian church of his own. I started going to it and really enjoyed it. Although my daughter and I and one other couple were the only whites attending, never once did I feel any prejudice towards us. There were maybe 30 people going any given Sunday back then.

During the divorce we stopped going. Didn't go for nearly a year. Decided one day we would start going again.

Walked in, there must have been 100 people in there. Just that one other couple, my daughter and I were the only whites. I started getting cold fish handshakes, replies of "yeah" while they look away when I said hi. I'd catch someone staring at us with a "I disapprove" look on thier face. I really felt like we were the only grains of salt in the pepper shaker that day.

We stopped going. Problem is is the preachers grand daughter and my daughter are friends, I'm always running her over to his house to drop her off or pick her up. I see the preacher just about every time, he hasn't asked why I stopped going. Hopefully he never will, I don't want to tell him the truth and I don't want to lie to him either.

I feel I should try to live by the golden rule - do unto others as you would have them do unto you. In other words - be nice to each other. Can't we all just try to get along. I've been to a few differnt churches - nondenomanational as a child, then Baptist and now Catholic. I've liked all of them, but I felt the Catholics were the most giving, even though their church was the poorest. I hope that Jesus will be proud of our efforts to be decent people, becuase that is what i try to do.:D

I've been raised as a Christian and currently am just didn't start really getting into it until recently...anyways I feel like I need to say this but bad experiences and suffering does not prove that God isn't real. If you need me to support my statement I will come back with support...Not trying to start something but it is what I believe...

Raised Methodist, consider myself spiritual but not religious now. There's definitely a higher force that can be tapped into, I believe there are many different ways to do so, whether through prayer, meditation, or hiking in the woods or canoeing on a smooth lake early on a beautiful morning.

I begrudge no one their freedom of religion or freedom from religion, we all need something to believe in. Just don't try to tell me that yours is the only way and demand that I change, I promise I will not do so of you.
