What's your take on speed cameras?

We have the combination of red-light and speed cameras here in New Mexico at several intersections. I am OK with the red-light camera, however I disagree with the speed cameras. Traffic approaches each light as a pack, we all slow down through the light, then speed back up to the next intersection. As stated in many of these posts, they are simply used by the city for revenue generation. Currently there is a political battle over permanently banning them on state highways.

 

They just announced that AZ DPS will not be re-newing the contract for the photo radar.

 

Personally hate these things, but my experience has only been overseas.

Got a ticket in the mail here in the states with a picture of my rental and me in Spain... imagine my surprise for the 100 Euro ticket!

Red light cameras to keep people from stacking up blocking intersections during heavy traffic and to keep dumbasses from just out and out running them causing wrecks are one thing but the speeding ones are lame bullshit. Do the speeding cameras give out tickets for people doing 35 in a 55 impeding the flow of traffic and being a hazard to those doing the speed limit? No. Why the fuck not? Get rid of them.

 

We had them in Charlotte, but they were ruled an invasion of privacy and were taken out. Guess the took the wrong pic of a county commish getting blown by a hooker.

 

If they can't prove it's you behind the wheel they can't issue you the ticket.

The cameras are about the money.
In Seattle a camera was installed at a busy intersection that didn't meet the legal requirements for using camera enforcement and the judges started throwing them out if people appeared in court.
The judges also informed the city that because they believed the camera was illegal they will toss every ticket from that intersection that appeared before the court but the city left the camera up because most people don't go to court and just mail in the payment.
