    Registration remains the same every year.
    The Vehicle Licensing Fee (personal property tax) drops every year.
    It used to be 10% per year, but it may be 5% now.

    My '08 was purchased in December '11 for $13,500, tags last month were:
    Registration = $69
    VLF = $72 (only part that is tax deductible)
    Weight Fee = $24
    County/District = $10
    Smog Abatement = $20
    $195

    Wife's '04 Rav4 (bought in Dec '03 for $24k):
    Registration = $69
    VLF = $22
    County/District = $10
    $101

    The Smog Abatement Fee goes away when I have to start getting smog tests, so whether you have to get a smog test or not, California still gets their $20.

    And just a note on the VLF....
    For those who owe more on your trade-in than it's worth, and the "nice finance guy" is willing to write the difference into your purchase order for your new vehicle....
    That $25,000 vehicle that you just took out a $30,000 loan for means that you are going to be paying VLF based on a $30,000 depreciation instead of $25,000.

    In Georgia the state, not the country, the law was changed last year and you do not pay a yearly title tax on new car purchases. Upon purchase you pay the title tax once and then yearly, just pay for the tag fee of 18 dollars for a regular tag. The tax last year was 6.5% and it exempted you from paying the regular 8% sales tax in this county on the vehicle. This year it moves up to 6.75% and next yr. it will go to 7%, and this applies only to new vehicle purchases.
    I purchased my 12 at a time before the law was started, and luckily I was grand fathered in to the law. I payed sales tax on my Taco, but I was given credit for the new title tax. So with both our new vehicles, we went from paying yearly around 6 to 7 hundred under the old law, to now paying 36 under the new one.

    It's different for each state but CA, NY and HI are some of the highest I've seen. I believe mine was $369 last year for a 2011 until I got it converted to "non-commercial use" as every pick up truck bought in CA is automatically considered and registered as a commercial vehicle.

    Buy a shell. It is a process though. You will have to get DMV to inspect it and the shell has to be "permanently" mounted. You can just make it look like it is. The actual guy who inspected mine put down "riveted" in my paper work. Mine was just clamped on.

    It's $80 off a year with the truck being registered as personal vehicle rather than commercial.

    I think some of you are mixing in the property taxes along with the registration fee...
