Ok ladies and gentlemen. Your favorite show is back and its called, "Whats That Sound". Now its quite simple. Ill play a video and you tell me what that loud, metalic knocking sound is. Winner gets nothing but a "way to go" and a digital hand shake. Well, because im broke as shit and trying to keep my truck on the road. Maybe Ill give you a shout out on my non existing podcast. So withou further ado. "Whaaaats That Sound?!"

Not even sure if that is where the ping is coming from but it was the loudest for the camera at this position. Worth to mention its way louder on cold start up then quites a little once warmed up but is still there as you can hear in the video.

I can't tell from the video. You can use like a dowel rod or long screw driver and point it close to the different components pulleys to try and detect where it's coming from better, did that even make sense? I have a hard time explaining crap some times

It sounds like a bearing somewhere. Could be PS pump as noted. Or alternator. Or AC compressor. Or idler/tensioner. Or something else completely. I would start by putting the blade end of a long screwdriver against some non-moving piece near each of these and the round end in your ear and seeing if you can hear the 'loudest' one. If not, try to wiggle the pulleys on all of the above and see if you can detect any looseness. If so, that's likely the culprit. (FWIW, I've had more than one of those idler pulleys go bad - never on a Toyota, but on other cars.) Luckily, that's a relatively easy fix. Lastly - and I would definitely saveit for last after I've tried everything else - you can loosen and remove each belt and wire-tie it out of the way (don't remove from engine) and then start the engine. If it is indeed one of the belt-driven accessories, then the motor WON'T make that sound with that belt off. If that doesn't work, then it could be something more 'internal'. Hope not!

Just pull the belts (you'll have to anyway) and spin everything and wiggle by hand. I bet you find it easy enough as it does sound like from the front.
Some have had the bearing behind the fan fail. It's often ignored.

They have those "mechanic stethescopea" at harbor freight for relatively cheap. Think it would be useful here?

Sorry. Your title made this song pop in my head from, well, a while ago. Both the opening line and the chorus. :D

What @cruiserguy is suggesting is a home brewed mechanics stethoscope. Assuming you don't have a real one in the tool box, or know someone you can borrow from.

Just be careful of moving parts while you examine the patient.

Video sound really does nothing for me either.

    Sure enough to say
Take the belts off and check all pulleys to at least eliminate the other possibilities. AFTER using the ear extension screw driver.
Edit: I'm not a fan of putting screwdrivers or rods on the Engines spinny bits while its running. Just said that to appease the know it alls.

I have one but like a dowel better. The scope is hard to nail down as it hears 'everything in the whole engine at one time'. The dowel doesn't pick up rattles as good though. Maybe a screwdriver is the best:notsure:

edit: This also may be a HF 'scope issue. Maybe with some insulation at the ears and/or tube, it may cut down 'clutter'.

And if you don't have a dowel or long screwdriver or whatever, it definitely wouldn't hurt at all to do as you say and check each component with/without the belt just to know all is well. That'd be my route more than likely cause my hearing is so bad:D

I wouldn't know a best, I'd say whatever works and helps you figure it out lol
I have one of those stethoscope things and what worked well for my half deaf hearing in one ear only was that simple probe thing. I could just have that lightly resting on anything close to what I'm wanting to hear and sure came through clear for me

Ok, I'm pretty sure I have found out where it's coming from. But, I honestly don't know what it is and what better to look like a fool, but to a bunch of strangers. That being said. It's a motor/pump??? directly under the power steering pump. It does have a pully on it. I searched and searched for diagrams to look and figure out what it was so I didn't come on here looking like an idiot but couldn't find anything so here I am. I can take a picture if needed but Im sure someone is laughing right now knowing exactly what it is. So yeah, nice size, expensive-looking motor or something, directly underneath power steering pump. I put a stethoscope and screwdriver in all different areas and that sound def seemed to be coming from the object that I don't know what is. Any help, please.
