Scrub, scrubbing, scrub radius...is something totally different than rubbing when talking tires. You had me a little confused.

Assuming you're rubbing in the cab mount area...
The outside of the tire will sit 1/2 further out; it will rub more.

The inside of the tire will sit 1/2" further in; you might have clearance issues with the UCA.

Going to a 8" wide rim is allowing the full section width of a 285, whereas your stock 7" isn't.

So would it be better if I could find an 8" wide rim with 4" or 4.25" backspacing. What do people running 285s normally go with?

Most get an 8" wide, 0 to -12 offset, 4.5"-4" backspace.
4" would give you the same backspace you currently have; should clear the UCAs fine.
But now the outside will sit 1" further out...it will rub worse.
    No free lunch with 285s.

If the spacers were eliminated and ran the 8" wide rim...they would not stick out further

1/2" tire protrusion; 1" wheel protrusion.
    Right now he has a 16x7 et 30 with 1.25" spacers; basically a 16x7 et 0.
I thought it was accurate, if he goes to a 16x8 et -12, to match his current 4" of backspace. :notsure:

True it would stick out more, by a little more than .6". Offset on stock 7" should be 30...equals 5.18 - 1.25" spacers = 3.93" backspace....which sticks out about 4.07". According to your link total tire is 10 mm wider...I would think 5 mm each side.
    (4.5 - 4.07) + .2 = .63

    Work...?
Fitment? Rubbing? Not adding a ton of positive scrub?

The tire will protrude about an 1" with those wheels; rubbing shouldn't be a problem.
Maybe some plastic or mudflaps...depending on use and caster.

Thanks for the info, I was pretty sure I had bolt pattern, offset and backspacing right. I just wanted to confirm that rubbing shouldn't be a problem and that a CMC shouldn't be a factor. I am also planning on putting about 2.5"-3" of lift on it and installing an SSO slimline and a Smittybuilt X20 10k, I will do UCA's if needed.

@splitbolt This is the other wheel I am looking at any input on this one.

    TIA

    The lift changes things.
You'll more than likely need UCAs with that much lift. This will move the wheel rearward; but with that much lift, it still shouldn't be a problem.

Yes. They're essentially the same as your first choice.
Just make sure they clear the calipers; some 16"s run into spoke interference.
You'll probably have to call the manufacturer or a wheel shop that knows their shit.

If I may interject your first choice has a center bore of 106.1 which is good and the size of your hub, your second choice has center bore of 108mm not a deal breaker, but our trucks are hub centric.. If you go with the second choice I'd look into some hub rings to keep the wheels centered on the hubs. Just something I thought I'd point out:D

Thanks guys, you are going to find this kind of ironic. I am the alignment tech with 20+years experience for a 6 bay tire shop. I have never dealt with sizing and fitment of wheels so I came here looking for Tacoma specific info....lol

Hey guys, so I've read all 44 pages and haven't really found if this set up would work. I've got 17x9 +18mm offset. I plan on running 265/65/17 tires. Stock 2007 TRD Tacoma. Will this work or do I need spacers or a lift? Or should I just return them and get 17x9 -12mm offset. Looks like most guys run the -12mm set up. Thanks!
