Is there an ideal offset in a 17” wheel to run 285’s on a 3rd Gen Tacoma with minimal rubbing issues ? I’m expecting some trimming just curious as to wether certain offsets would make rubbing less of an issue ?

Looking to see if a 16x8.5 with a +18 offset will fit my 19 TRD OR stock suspension 265/75s?

I’m sorry if this is has already been discussed in this thread but I didn’t really see a specific answer...

I’m trying to find out if these 17x8 SEMA TRD pro wheels with a 5mm offset will rub on my 2006 stock suspension non lifted prerunner.

I see a lot of people have these on their taco, but I also know they come in a varying number of offsets...can anyone give me any idea if these will work or not? And any idea about how much they’ll stick out??

Any info is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

    Hi All,

Please forgive me i am not the best to write in English.

I was wondering the effect of increasing the offset on a wheel to the suspension itself.
When i think of it, moving the tire/wheel farther from the truck ack like a lever on the suspension spring.

Saying that as i have a gen4 TRD Sport and the springs are very stiff.
Would increasing, let's say 1.5" on each sides help ?

    Thanks..!

Thanks, but i mostly want to know the impact on the springs and if in fact it will lighten the suspension (less stiff)

    You're on the right track...
Increasing positive scrub radius acts as a lever and reduces the 'effective' spring rate at the wheel.

Here's a couple good videos explaining the effects of changing scrub radius.

What tire size do you plan on running with the new wheel?
Do you want the tire or wheel to stick out 2"?
2" on each side or 1" on each side for a total of 2" track width increase?
What rim width(s) for the new wheel?

Little update - I've installed my spacer and it does lighten the pre-load a bit.

Here is what it looks like with 1.5" spacer on stock wheels. (2016 TRD Sport)

Can I get some quick help. I’m
Ordering wheels for my 2012 it has 5100’s all around with OME 884’s for about 2.5” of lift on my access cab. I have the stock UCA’s and it drives great and no rub with 265/75/16 that I have ran a couple years now. The lift was just put on this spring.
I want to go to 285/70/17 tires with offsets to pick from below which is best suited for my rig? I would like to stay even with the fender flairs or just a slight poke. I’m on gravel a lot and don’t want to beat up the side of the truck.

    Thanks!!

Trying to figure out if I can replace my stock 16 X 7's with 5.5" backspacing another stock looking steelie set that I picked up for free with 4.5" BS? Is it just a matter of matter of having the tires stick out an inch farther out with less backspacing? What sort of increased stress are you placing on bearings and such?

Can someone who just happen to know off hand help answer this?

Offset for OEM 16" steel in SR for example and Offset for OEM 16" alloy in SR5 for example.

And is the offset for the TRDOR 16" the same?

    TIA

I think the offset for the OEM 16" alloy SR5 wheels is 25. that might help. I have it input as a 2017, but you can change the year easily, although I don't believe it matters for what you're looking at.

I'm trying to research this right now because I got offered a super sweet deal from my local Toyota dealership on 4x brand new TRD Pro 4runner Wheels with brand new Nitto Terra Grapplers for $723. Some guy buying a new 4runner wanted different wheels and tires I guess. Anyway, I'm trying to figure out if I can put them on my SR5 without anything rubbing. I'm hoping they're just plug-n-play, but the offset difference (if I'm reading it correctly) is almost an inch. This is all new to me and I'm a little overwhelmed and hoping I can get some help on here. I haven't been able to find any info on anyone doing the same swap.

The wheels and tires on my SR5 right now are: 245/75r16, and I think the offset is 25.
The wheels and tires that I want to buy from the dealer are: 265/70r17, and i think the offset is 4.

If I'm reading that right that's a 21mm difference. I dunno how big of a deal that is, especially with the tires being slightly larger.

Any help is greatly greatly appreciated! Seriously!

21mm difference in what? Backspace, whee poke, tire poke...? It's only an apples-to-apples comparison if you maintain the same tire width and rim width.

I suspect your after wheel and tire poke.
    Here's a link to a 17x7.5 +4mm, 265/70/17 comparison. Here's another for a 17x8 +4mm, 265/70/17 Scroll down to "Fenders" for wheel and tire poke differences.

Yeah man, this is really out of my wheelhouse (no pun intended). I've driven the same '97 GMC Sierra 1500 my entire life until now. My grandpa gave it to me when I was 17 and I've driven it for 12 years. It still purrs like a kitten. But I got my Taco in February and until now I haven't cared to 'mod' a vehicle like this. I'm having a blast though! Got Clazzio seat covers, Redline Tuning hood struts, a tri-fold soft bed cover, a TRD Pro grill, black matte end caps for the rear bumper, and all kinds of little odds and ends in between. But my point is I've never messed with tires and wheels before really and it's just a lot to learn, but I don't wanna pass on this deal if this setup will work.

If I understand correctly, both my current wheels and the wheels I'm eyeballing have a width of 7". I'm not sure if that helps you help me or not. I'm gonna check out those links right after I click this "Post Reply" button. Thanks for the response, btw.

Edit: Oh yeah! I was just using that site! The only problem was I wasn't quite sure what it was telling me. .

Edit again: I mean, I understand what it's saying to a certain extent, but when you add everything together, I just don't know how to wrap my head around all the geometry that's going on here to come up with a simple "It'll rub or it won't".

-"Tire will stick out 31 mm farther. Rim will stick out 21 mm farther. Make sure that you have enough room under the fender. If not, consider narrower tires or higher offset"
-"Will fill out the wheelwell by extra 14 mm. Make sure that you have enough room under the fender. If not, consider lower profiles or smaller rims"
-"Positive scrub radius (about 17 mm). Scrub radius will be changed by 17 mm, this may affect the car's handling. Please check manufacturer recommendations. Please be aware that calculated value is approximate."

It's hard to quantify...differences in tire alignment, type/brand and lift can affect results from one truck to another.

There's 2 things which will affect rub as far as changing offsets; increased tire poke and increased positive scrub radius.

Increasing positive scrub puts more tire to the outside of where the tire pivots on the ground. This causes the tire to 'move' forward and rearward in the wheel well more, as it(outside of tire) now follows a greater arc, when turning.

You've chosen a pretty popular combo.
At most, I'd say you might need to remove or massage mud flaps and/or have an alignment with a bit more caster.
