My Wheel Bearing blew out yesterday on the drive home. I jacked the truck up and theres lots of play in the bearing and it makes a grinding noise every now and again when driving on the road. I noticed theres a fluid leaking out of the end of my CV Axle as well. Could this be caused by the blown wheel bearing and the leaking would stop upon fixing the bearing? Or is this a whole new issue all together and I have to look into replacing the cv axle when I do the bearing swap as well.

Not driving the truck anymore until this gets fixed, the grinding is making me cringe every time I hear it haha.

Pic of the leakage below, any help is appreciated :D

doubt it was caused by it but never know

replace the bearing and that seal, usually the bearing is loose/worn causing it to leak

yeah. you're going to have to pull the axle from the diff and get that seal out and replace it. the hardest part for me was getting the axle out.

part number for the seal on the driver's side is 90311-47026.

it's fairly easy to do the seal. it's right on the outside edge of the differential. I bought two seals when I did mine in case I messed one up. I needed both. I didn't have the seal going in straight when I started it the first time.

How did you manage it? Was reading some people used slide hammers and others just got a prybar in between the diff and axle and got it out that way

I had to use a slide hammer. pry bar wasn't doing it. the slide hammer wasn't easy either. I had to use a hose clamp to keep it on the cv. some people use rope with slip not around the cv and a hammer on the other end. then yank the hammer. works like a slide hammer but it's easier to keep on the cv.

Theres a significant amount of play where the CV joint enters the diff as well. I can pull/push the cv around 4-5mm out of the diff and can also push it up slightly. I dont think it should be doing that..

By comparison, the passenger side has a very very slight amount of play but has 0 issues with vibrations/burnt bearings etc..

the up/down and front/back play is caused by loose tolerances in the needle bearing that the cv shaft spins in. East coast gear supply makes a solid bushing with much tighter tolerances that many replace the needle bearing with. there's a big thread on it here. I've changed mine. that's when I did the seal that is leaking for you.

the in out play might not be normal, but I remember having some on my truck.

I've had the bushing in for 100k with no issues so far.
