So I just failed the ever stupid Maine state inspection sticker tests.

One of the things I failed for was both front wheel bearings.
I jacked her up and had a go- there's no in/out play, no left/right play, and just a hair of play from top to bottom. I've driven far worse for many years.

I picked up bearings from napa- they gave me two small boxes per wheel. I've not looked inside yet.

Does anyone know offhand if the bearings are pressed or not? I've got a press, but knowing ahead of time means planning accordingly!

I pulled the inspection guide and it reads:

"Reject vehicle if the bearing's end play exceeds the manufacturer's specifications."
    Helpful, right?

I've got a feeling that shop was just playing me to get extra labor and replace the bearings themselves. The inspection system is a scam- but theoretically that hair of play could be outside of "manufacturers specifications". Does anyone know off hand?
Happy to replace the bearings if that needs to happen, but I'm getting real tired of these shops screwing me.

Yes, the bearings are pressed in. They need to be done by someone with some experience on Toyota, as not to screw them up. I have had to replace bearings many times because someone didn't know the right process, or didn't have the proper tools. It can be done if you have your own press though.

As for their inspection, I have NEVER seen a state inspection that ever referenced wheel bearings in my LIFE. I would call BS on that one and ask them to give you not only the rule that shows they can fail you for bad bearings, but the actual reading that they had that shows your bearings were bad.

Yep- they were screwing with me.

Went to another shop and they brought me in to show me why I was failing- lower ball joints had significant vertical play.

Replaced the balljoints and got a sticker.

Sigh. Maine inspection is BS- but I'm glad they caught the ball joints before they broke.

Glad it worked out that way. LBJs are not too bad a job to swap. Wheel bearings are one of the worst jobs on these trucks.

Grey wire and keyless entry. I like stock.
"I. Wheel Bearings (1) Reject vehicle if the bearing’s end play exceeds the manufacturer’s specifications. (2) Reject vehicle if roughness or noise is evident during wheel rotation. (3) Reject vehicle if binding or roughness is detected while rotating bearing. (4) Reject vehicle if the bearing adjustment locking device is missing, not engaged, or not functioning."

    Its in that PDF.

Glad you got your truck to pass though. Maine has an effed up inspection.

I'm just gonna go with BamaToy's already done hub/bearings and be done since mine is starting to make odd rumble up front, sounds like from passenger side. New order for 2 coming to someone's online store very soon.............
