I was pulling my wheel bearings apart today to try and squash a weird groaning/howling sound when turning out of parking lots or generally turning sharp slowly. I noticed that the spindles looked different and was wondering what I should do before replacing the bearings. The first set of pictures are what I believe may be bad on the driver's side, and the last two are what the passenger side looks like, which appears normal to me.

I can see the bearing was spinning the inner race. I’d replace it.
Post up a pic of the backside of the left inner bearing.

Replace the spindle in addition to the bearings and races correct?

How does it fit on the spindle, any slop?

Not really, seems if it has some pressure on it like it would once assembled the inner race holds on to the spindle. I am more so worried about the groove it seems to have dug on the backing letting the bearing move further back than intended. However I don't believe I have time to wait for a spindle to come in the mail right now, so it may have to be a project for later. I'm guessing the last time that these got done (not sure when or who did it), it was not tightened quite enough allowing for some play and for that inner race to occasionally spin especially when turning when the forces arent completely even, slowing grinding material off the spindle. Seeing this also makes me believe this is what was making that sound I was originally trying to get rid of.

I typically see the outer bearing fail first but that doesn’t mean the inner one had not in the past. Sounds like you have no choice but to reassemble it.
The grove would set the assembled hub further in, you could measure that for verification.

Found one on eBay I can get in time, so will reassemble for now, finish up passenger side and get greasy again here in a few days.
